Las Vegas breaks tourism record with 40 million visitors

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

More than 40 million people have visited Las Vegas this year, which breaks a tourism record, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Rossi Ralenkotter, president and CEO of the LVCVA, said investments by the resorts and an increase in direct international air service from Canada and Mexico were responsible for the increase.

Good for Las Vegas - my hometown. This town has sure changed since I moved here (15 years ago). Gone are the $3.99 buffets on the Strip. Gone are the $7.77 Steak and Lobster deals at the Sahara.

Downtown is much better. You can still find great deals Downtown and on Boulder Highway for food bargains. Local Casinos still offer a great value for food, booze and rooms. Priceline can still be your friend in LAS - just watch out for the areas you choose.

Good for the City of LAS and Clark County. ^^^

^^^ to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Keep up the good work. This city (County) has changed - overall for the better.

LAS is a bargain (depending on the days of travel). Convention weeks and Weekends are much higher for rooms.

If anyone is traveling to LAS from 12/18/2014 to 12/29/2014 - you can find some great room rates. Lowest of the year! Hint.

I agree. Vegas is a great place to visit and there are still good values to be had, even if there has been a lot of change. You have a lot of online options such as the MyVegas game, Travelzoo, Groupon, Restaurant.com to get value ahead of time on food or activities. There are websites that display a lot of the discounts for all of the hotels. Gambling for small stakes at a strip property likely won't get you much of anything, but at some of the off-strip/downtown casinos, you'll likely get a decent discount for a future stay or possibly even a comp offer. Vegas can be as expensive or as cheap as you'd like, depending on your interests and if one wants to put some effort into finding deals.

I've enjoyed seeing downtown revitalized and I tend to spend a lot more time there than the strip when I visit. I know I've read a lot about how the bigger casinos are losing so much money...but it sure isn't because people aren't visiting Vegas! Thanks for sharing the link.

This week (Dec 15th) had some very good prices - MGM Grand for $45, for example (direct booking, no coupons or codes needed). Even the normally pricey Cosmopolitan had direct-book rooms for $140 ($112 if booked on the AAA portal). And mid-side rental from Hertz (direct book) for $17. I very much enjoyed my short stay, and will be back soon

Edit to add: Saw this photo on Twitter earlier today - I'd guess from the cars and the marquees that it's from the latter 1970s:

1969 according to the page below, but other sites have Shirley MacLaine performing at Caesars in 76 (among other dates in the mid 70's)

Las Vegas has become very expensive. Not just the hotels but airfare as well. Soon, only the rich will be able to afford to travel to LV.

Vegas isn't even close to where it was in the mid-2000s. ADRs so far in 2014 are 20% behind 2007 levels - and not only are properties higher-end now compared to back then, but there is more variety, too.

True, but wages have been stagnant for a decade. You know how much I paid last October to fly B6 to LAS for a long weekend? $650 roundtrip!!
