Exclamation jetBlue bids for Virgin America

B6 is not the only one bidding.
U.S. budget airline carrier Virgin America Inc has received acquisition interest from several companies, including JetBlue Airways Corp and Alaska Air Group Inc, a person familiar with the matter said on Monday.

If JetBlue buys VX then why keep the old name? Just make it a proper takeover and be done with it.

What would the benefit be to jetBlue with this purchase?

Instant presence on the west coast, including slots at SFO/LAX which are hard to come by otherwise..

Eliminate a transcon competitor.

Also, the purchase of 59 A32x aircraft that would be immediately familiar to flight crew, cabin crew, and maintenance staff. VX and B6 use near-identical fleets.

Combine that with the airlines' well-documented cultural similarities and you have a near-perfect fit.

Seemed to me to be a way to drive their stock price up near-term. I wouldn't think they are actually in the market to sell.

Neither SFO or LAX are slot controlled.

Slots at LGA, EWR, JFK, and DCA. Including a transcontinental slot at DCA.

Gates at DAL

The ability to quickly offer an F product (Virgin Mint?) on many more routes.

Trained Pilots

I also wonder if B6 and AS could split the purchase of VX.

It looks like Alaska will be the buyer for around $2 billion, although details are still being negotiated.

Thanks for your reply.
Seems like a bit of a reach but now seems that Alaska went over the top and JetBlue is out. At the end of the day this may very well be a good thing for both Alaska who can more easily afford this vs. JetBlue who in my opinion doesn't need the added debt load.
