Thanks for all the responses.
I'll only be taking the JR West from KIX to Kyoto, spending a couple of days there (mostly on foot), and then hopping on the Shinkansen to Tokyo.

Kind of OT, but I greatly prefer ICOCA over SUICA. SUICA has an ugly-... mascot which is completely unappealing, whereas ICOCA has the awesome Ico-chan, a completely ugly mascot which is so terribly addictive. I think I own him in at least 5 different sizes, and I am not kidding. :P Even my 6-month old son stopped crying and started laughing when I showed him an Ico-chan plushy doll.
