Rome: Things to know about Rione Monti
I have a thread like this on the SlowTravel site, but for those FTers who aren't also STers - here are a bunch of links I've compiled about Monti.
First here are bookmarks with general Monti info:
Articles (if you read just one of these, read the first one):
NY Times:
In Rome, Monti Is a Quiet Treasure by Susan Spano, July 2011
NYTimes :
In Rome, a Place for Romans
Travel+Leisure:
Europe's Best Neighborhoods for Foodies
Budget Travel:
Neighborhood watch: Monti, Rome
Guardian:
The full Monti: Rome's cool quarter
Blog posts:
ParlaFood:
Eating and Drinking in Monti
Elizabeth Minchilli:
Monti: Where to Eat
Food shopping in monti
And these 3 links are from tour companies/rental agencies with their summations of Monti:
Monti - Rome's 'it' neighbourhood
MONTI QUARTER: Churches, monuments, streets... and life
Rione Monti - The most ancient quarter of Rome
And here's an interesting link posted by another STer regarding Monti:
Rione dei Monti

Urbana 47
This restaurant is mentioned in the following articles:
NY Times:
In Rome, Really Local Food
Condé Nast (Urbana 47 is just one of the restaurants mentioned):
Relishing Rome
And here's one of the companion articles to that CNTraveler piece (you have to use the orange arrows seen on the right of the screen to view the whole list):
Eating Out in Rome: Where the Locals Go
(FYI: There's a whole Rome City Guide by Condé Nast linked in the sidebars).

One of my favorite Rome blogs, Revealed Rome, suggests this place in her pleasant, short video, along with Urbana 47 (and they're the only 2 eateries mentioned in her "favorite Rome spots"):

Pizzeria suggestion: Alle Carrette
Alle Carrette Pizzeria
Via della Madonna dei Monti, 95
The link brings you to a streetview looking down Via MdM towards the pizzeria (there is no streetview available for the actual location).
Telephone: 06 6792770
The place seems to be on Facebook and shows a Bing map with the address "Vicolo le carrette".
From Elizabeth Minchilli's blog: our local pizza joint: pizzeria alle carrette
From Food in Rome (this isn't a good review btw): Alle Carrette Pizzeria
From Via dei Gourmet (in Italian): Alle Carrette
And here's the website translated: Alle Carrette
From Rome File: Roman Pizza

Here's what I'd like to know about Monti: Not too many years ago, anybody who stayed near Cavour, especially on the side towards Santa Maria Maggiore, was slammed by many Rome experts for staying too close to the station and too far from the "atmospheric" parts of Rome, namely the centro storico near the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Campo dei Fiori. So now that Monti is the "in" spot, has it actually moved?

There will always be those types of travelers who will look down their noses at people staying outside the fabled area you describe. And most of them probably never had a meal in Trastevere, let alone Testaccio. Monti has seen a lot of gentrification and as illustrated with all my linked articles, it's very much "on the map" now - and some of the blog posts above have bemoaned this fact. Trastevere received this "PR" first, now Monti. Testaccio will be next. (That's just my guess of course!).
Personally, I can't get enough Rome. I started in the FTer way, staying on points at the Cavalieri and Excelsior, and now I'm renting apartments. I choose to be based in Monti, for all the reasons linked above in those articles and especially because my focus is on the Late Republic/Early Imperial period. Staying in Monti makes all the sites I'm most interested in either right there (the Imperial Fora, the great Markets of Trajan and Museum, Palazzo Valentini), in walking distance (Colosseo/Forum/Palatine, Capitoline Museums, Basilica San Clemente, and my favorite Palazzo Massimo alle Terme just to the north, etc), or easily reached using the Cavour metro stop such as Ostia Antica, the Appian Way, the Aqueduct Park, etc.
Anyway, that's why I have all these links for Monti taking up space on my harddrive - so figured I might as well share them.
