2016 Pointbreaks Discussion Thread

Fellow flyertalkers,

discuss and guess when we will see pointbreaks in 2016 as suggested by valdor in his post. A new thread seems better than to continue the old one.

Our goal is to keep this thread helpful and informative. Therefore I ask you to post in this thread only question related to point breaks such as (but not limited to):
  • practice
  • information about hotel appearing and disappearing on the list
  • booking (and maybe cancelation) questions
  • link to hotel reviews
  • ...

If you have indication, when and if pointbreaks will be available, please give details for the source (e.g. was told (i.e. yestersday / on July 25th) by (the front desk / lounge agent / member of staf) of the (HIX City / a Holiday Inn in London) ...). I am fully aware that a reference to the source should / must be avoided, on the other hand, an indication is needed, that there was such a statement. It is a matter of trust and for us moderators difficult to differentiate between a joke post / rumor / trustd source.

Rumors, if the Point breaks are discontinued should only be posted, if you have a source for it and can name it (e.g. someone mentioned it in a hotel and you trust this source, etc.). Question, which hotels will be on the next point break list, could not really be answered. You might check the pointbreak hotel list thread about the history of CP and ICs on the pointbreak list.

All other discussions are not very helpful for person, who are new to this forum and do not know how to understand this discussion. I therefore aks you to post this kind of discussion in our Lounge Thread . I will move all non-topic discussions to this thread, so they are still available, but keep this thread a bit more useful.

Thank you very much for your cooperation and sorry for being once again the fun stopper - but such is life as a moderator.

The only pointsbreaks i've done was 2 nights at Jakarta HI Kemayoran. Very good.

Hoping for similar asian non-china based properties as well.

How fast do the best places usually run out of rooms? In a matter of minutes, hours, days?

cutting a stay short ...

Family stuff that came up means I'll have to cancel a 6-day PB stay, or (preferably) leave after just 3 nights.

I know cancellation is simple and no cost, but I'm not sure if curtailing a stay is penalty-free (other than losing the 5K points per night). Has anyone got insight into this ?

(And yes, I know I should have booked the stay as two 3-night packages )

I don't think changing to 3 days should be a problem. If you want to be safe, then call them to make sure. Don't believe hotels have instituted the fee for non top elite members the way airlines have.

I and many others have curtailed Pointbreaks stays with no problems. Points are usually refunded immediately.

Thought I learned my lesson, alas ...

I'm willing to bet that, while I haven't checked myself, some PB are gone in hours. I still own a house in Galveston, so wanted to go down for the weekend to check on it, and the next day or the day after PB availability was gone. May have been hours, but did not check back till a day or two later.

Also, had a meeting in Dublin, and that was gone within two days, and that was NOT during tourist season @:-)

Because of the two-booking limit, I originally placed the one I'm on now as a 5-day and a 10-day. With cancellation available a day in advance, I found out that my friends would be staying at another place nearby with a great discount for New Year's Eve, so I cancelled the 5-day PB.

Now I'm on the 10-day, with Spire benefits, and I think I probably aced it this time, with the way I booked it.

However, if I'm mostly going to be passing through, for any number of days, I usually split the booking as a 1-day, and then "n" days more, in case my flight or home emergencies delay me getting in. Then, I don't lose the whole longer booking for not showing up on time the first day.

Making changes or adjustments just doesn't happen, once the initial PB booking period has disappeared, so you have to guess the best you can during that short available time.

That said, I've booked some great paid rates for February and April, hoping to meet the other IHG promos, and if the PB happens to land in those locations, I'm going to have a hard time deciding what to do. (Throw me an IC for a couple weeks again, and that's not a problem to decide.)

But, come to think of it, I have enough points anyway -- time to burn some -- and cash is cash.
