Had a reply from the hotel today after booking five nights in December

Warmest greetings from Nagoya Tokyu Hotel.

"Thank you for choosing Nagoya Tokyu Hotel for your visit to Nagoya.

I am sorry to inform you that there was a problem with our reservation
system and the room was available to reserve for 3000JPN per night.
Since this is our system error, we will have to accept the reservations
with this rate for the reservations that are already made. However, we
just wanted to let you know that this is an error only and we do not
usually sell with the rate that we have offered and will not be able to
offer a room with the same price in the future.

Thank you very much for your understanding and hope to see you on your
visit."

I got the same letter. I think it's a great way to handle it, a quick response, and of course honoring the booking.

Stayed in Nagoya for one night a few years ago and really struggled to enjoy the city.
On the other hand, just 30 minutes away is Inuyama which has a worthwhile castle - small but perfectly formed - and the magnificent Meiji Mura Architectural Park, in my opinion perhaps the most important attraction in Japan for anyone interested in Japanese history and its spectacular transition from the feudal era into the modern nation it is today.

There are good selection of restaurants, as in any major Asian cities...

I've been there for work a few times. Unfortunately, even my hotel staff cringed when I asked her about local tourist attractions. Nagoya is a big city people visit for business, especially automotive (Toyota), not touristy stuff.
Other than the above mentioned places, I would recommend taking the train to see the Toyota museum. Other than that, the train to Osaka/Kyoto isn't terribly expensive/long. (However, I wouldn't PLAN a trip where I would stay in a Nagoya hotel and day trip to Osaka/Kyoto...)

thanks for your recommendations, is a JR pass the way to go? I guess some regional trains or commuter trains do not accept a JR pass without an additional surcharge. Is Nagoya mostly served by JR rail?
thanks!

The dominant transport company in and around Nagoya is Meitetsu.

http://www.meitetsu.co.jp/eng/route/route-map.html

Within Nagoya itself there is the Nagoya Municipal Subway.

The JR Pass will get you to and from Nagoya but won't be particularly useful for when you're there.

If you are leaving/entering Japan from KIX and don't intend to charge up and down the country during your stay, the JR pass may not be the best choice for you. Without knowing your plans it is impossible to confirm or not whether this option would suit you.
