Making sense of Hilton reward options -- comments/corrections/etc.

General discussion of rewards options should be posted in one of the Definitive topic threads (most of which are noted/linked to in the FAQ), or in a new, separate thread on the issue at hand.

Thumbs up

Cannot believe what my eyes are seeing. Hhonors should elevate you beyond ghetto gold to super special five times better than diamond status.

Now I am going to read what you have posted and see if there is some hidden value in this program because point redemption would not be a reason to stay with Hhonors IMO.

Thanks for the kind words.

FYI, as of this morning the initial buildout is complete, including entries for the less common awards (Grand Vacations, All-Inclusives) for which there were only placeholder posts at first.

I have almost certainly forgotten key issues -- just now, I added a note to post #1 on blackout dates after realizing that was missing -- or gotten things wrong. And as the program evolves, what's right now will need updating tomorrow. (In particular, the new Points & Money/Premium Rooms/Room Upgrade rewards are a moving target.) Let me know where I can improve.

Premium room reward oddity

I do not know if other have observed the same thing, but premium room rewards can actually be much more attractive than standard rewards. E.g. Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort (FL) has standard rooms available for 50.000 points, while premium rooms are available for as little as 22.510 points... Standard rooms are priced $149, with the premium rooms starting at $169. I guess this has to do with the end of August being low season, but to me this just does not make sense.

This probably arises because there is no seasonality in HHonors standard room reward rates (W=A excepted); they're the exact same rate all around, while premium room rewards are based on a certain exchange rate between points and dollars.

Guess I have been living with my head in the clouds. I have been Diamond for 8 years now with Hilton and knew nothing about VIP Awards... Thanks for the great eye-opener!

Taking stock after the first year

It has been a little over a year since I first posted the sticky thread http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hilto...hing-else.html, so this seems like a good time to solicit more detailed feedback.

  • Is anything missing?
  • Are there any errors? I've tried to update with new developments (death of Point Stretchers; funny business with Points & Money co-pays at east Asian Conrad properties) as I see them, but it's possible I've missed things on FT or noted in the blogosphere.
  • Are there other ways the information in the thread (or the manner of its presentation) could be improved?

Please chime in.
