alter ego - please allow me to welcome you to Flyertalk and our corner of it. I will leave this thread open for now (if you'd really prefer to have it closed, feel free to PM me about it). Your post, while may not be exactly politically correct, wasn't bad. I posted the "warning" above since the "same old debate" about muslim countries had surfaced again.

While I agree with a lot of what KenJohn suggests, I would say that you could go from South Africa via Asia to Australia - look at connections in BKK, SIN and HKG. A lot of it depends on whether you have any FFP alliance allegiances of course.

As mentioned above, I'd be happy to go via IST (which I have been to a lot and adore) or BEY (which I have not been to but heard fantastic things about from friends). BKK is nowhere near as 'backward' as I get the impression you think it is, don't feel you have to go to NRT to taste 'civilisation'!

I'm not trying to criticise, but if you are going to take a RTW, do think about being adventurous and try something new somewhere - you may well be surprised!

I'm not sure how far out of your way you might want to travel--but if you wanted to travel east and then south, there are plenty of Westerner-friendly bars and clubs Tokyo-Shanghai-Hong Kong-Taipei: all quite modernized cities (as is Singapore, of course).

I wouldn't miss Buenos Aires. It's one of the great/fun cities of the world. I think you can fly from there or Sao Paolo nonstop to South Africa. I think Air Malaysia flies to one or the other from Southeast Asia and maybe then goes on to Johannesburg. I'm sure there are many on this board who would know how to do this itenerary. I would skip North America and save it for another trip.

Though I have not been to Argentina or Brasil (yet) I do recommend stops in South America. Try going west from UK (Iberia goes to most major cities in S. America). End in Santiago de Chile, and you can take LAN to Auckland on a 13 hour flight. From NZ to Asia, and back home, you would truely have traveled around the world! Lima is a great place to meet people though there is not much to do there. Wow.. it would be a dream for me to travel 6 weeks. Let us know what you decide to do.

Sorry. I was in a hurry trying to be helpful and would have just used MH, but I didn't want to be too FlyerTalky. However, if anyone googles Air Malayia, Malayasia Airlines will be the first thing to pop up.

Not sure about your second point. I just assumed that it would be self-evident that the flight goes both ways. But aren't we talking about an RTW? Could he approach New Zealand from either east or west.

MH flies KUL/AUK, but I have to say, I don't know how, or if, any of this would work on an RTW. Again, just trying to be helpful.

Since we're being picky, SA is probably the place to look since it is part of *A.

SA also has a flight from South Africa to Brazil that runs a few times a week, but I don't know the schedule. I'd definately look into an option like the LAN flights from FRA/MAD to SCL or IB flights direct to EZE and visit around there before continuing to AKL, but it will likely work out better to go through something like BKK/SIN.

Beirut

[QUOTE=Jimmy67;7190390]Dubai is also not so much fun if you are straight.

So for first timer's to muslim countries you should try out:

1. Istanbul ( a 99% muslim country but with gay porn movies in the clubs; a nice example to disapprove your "theory")

2. Beirut: All gay arabs go there ... partying at the weekend and for holidays

what about some christian destinations like Kongo or Jamaika??
Ever kissed a man openly in Jamaika or Kongo? Not the police but the regulars will kill you for that.
In moslem countries they might watch or might laugh or will be disgusted , but won't attack you physically.

Beirut, Lebanon is NOT a Muslim country. It is Arab but the only country in the Middle East with a Christian president and half of the population Christian.

Sorry Petropony...didn't realise my contribution would be read as political..was just trying to shed some factual light on Lebanon's 'uniqueness' in the Arab world considering the OP's thoughts on travelling in the ME. Lebanon often gets 'lumped in with the rest'.

It's a great destination and undoubtedly the most gay tollerant region wise, with gay bars clubs and saunas(hamams). They even have a gay website:

www.helem.net

Just click on Beirut and you get all listings.
