Yes... things do get started very late. Almost impossible to get things up & running before midnight. Some cities like to say they 'never sleep', but Buenos Aires is one of the few that really abide by this rule...

Im not part of the Gay scene (being straight), but this news about EZE being a popular spot for GLBT travel was brought to my attention by an Italian couple during a recent visit to the Teatro Colon. I will try to keep my eyes and ears open to what may be useful information and will gladly post whatever I have from time to time.
One thing I can tell you is that a center for the GLBT community here is Pizza Piola (a classic Italian/Pizza place)... you will be able to get a lot of info on the Gay scene in Buenos Aires right there.

I'd always heard that Buenos Aires had a large, open gay community. I saw a popular film a few years back about a gay tenant in an apartment in Buenos Aires and his relationship with others in the building, or something like that, though I can't remember the name or how the film ended. ("The Apartment", maybe, or "The Tenant"?)
Anyway, I've only been to Venezuela, never EZE, but if I were to do a Grand Tour of South America, EZE would be on my must-list, along with Rio and Bahia and Machu Picchu and Trinidad. Is EZE a gay "Mecca"? Not sure about that, but I'm sure for any South American gays, it probably is.
Basically, the rule of thumb has always been (and is now, and will likely always be) that large cities will always have more numerous and more interesting gay activities going on in some form or another than is found in the smaller, more provincial and closed societies found outside the cities. Why? City-dwellers are more accustomed to living in close quarters on a daily basis with a more diverse society, and are consequently more tolerant than people who live in villages, with one way of life, and no/little racial/ethnic/religious diversity.
Back on topic: the last I heard was that EZE was becoming rather dangerous due to the economic crisis and the resulting rise in petty crime and robberies/muggings. As the economy has improved (or stabilized), that may no longer be true?

The one thing I can add about BsAs is that porteno men are almost universally drop-dead handsome. I always felt like I was flotsum bobbing in a sea of models.

My partner and I have visited BA twice and love it. We stay at the Marriott Plaza, a classic hotel (with an outstanding steakhouse) that is an easy walk to a pedestrian mall. If you love steak and red wine, you will be in heaven. We did have the benefit of being able to contact some local gay men who were friends of friends, and they were happy to show us around.

Need help with Buenos Aires
one of my friends is going to Buenos Aires for the entire month of September..lucky him..
I've been looking at expedia packages, the air alone is $925 or so, but I found some different packages, for anyone familiar with the city I'd like to book something near where we would go out to gay bars and such and be downtown.
I'd also be curious if what i'm getting is a good deal (which i know probably belongs in travelbuzz, but i want the "mo" perspective)
I punched in 9/22 to 9/27, four nights and air.
Buenos Aires Wilton Hotel , $679, this hotel says 3 blocks from Recoleta
NH Florida, $698
Park Elegance Kempinski Hotel Buenos Aires, $709
Howard Johnson Plaza $715
Argenta Towers Hotel and Suites $717
Park Central Kempinski Hotel Buenos Aires, $721
NH Latino $741, says on Diagonal Norte, (i like name...latino..hehe)
Sheraton $782 (which incidently is where my friend is staying)
There seems to be no definitive thread on B.A. that i could query..so any advice and thoughts appreciated!
Chris

Chris,
Of the hotels on your list, the HoJo Plaza, on Calle Florida, is the gay-friendliest. It's also located a few blocks from Plaza San Martin, where the downtown airport bus stops, so getting to/from EZE is a breeze.
What's helpful is that the HoJo Plaza provides gay guests with a welcome package which includes discount coupons, maps & directions, etc to the gay establishments in town. Ahem....they are also supposed to have a picture book of available "escorts" for your perusal in case you're too lazy to cruise the bars . Taxis are cheap in BA, the equiv of a few bucks to go across town.

check out www.thegayguide.com.ar
definitely the best guide i've seen to gay nightlife, etc, as well as recommendations as to where to stay. most of the gay nightife really isnt near the Sheraton, it's concentrated up Avenida Cordoba and in Palermo and REcoleta... luckily, cabs are dirt cheap so it's easy to get around, but certainly not within walking distance of the Sheraton...
feel free to email me w/ any more questions. Buenos Aires is, without a doubt, my favorite city and Ilove it, am happy to answer any questions about it.

I have also heard good theings about the HoJo-namely that it is MUCH nicer than US HoJo's and that it was super gay friendly-and having"guests"in your room is not a problem(unlike some properties in SA)and the location is good-close to the "festive"part of town.
Cannot wait till I get to go!(late next year)to BA and Rio!
