I could!

There are many, many boulangeries and patisseries that have other sandwiches, quiches and salads in addition to the ham and cheese on a baguette, where, if the weather is nice, you can take your lunch to a park or garden and sit on a bench. Many have seating inside and you can eat for less than 10 Euros.

There are lunch "Formules" all over town in cafes with some great food, usually 2 hot courses for under 12E.

That's a bit like going to New York to eat at Olive Garden and Appleby's, though there are folks who do that.

Be like me. I go to Monoprix and get a different baguette almost everyday (about 2 euros). Other days I buy some crackers, cheese and fish or chicken.

Okay, okay...yes I could eat those wonderful, crusty, Parisian baguettes with ham everyday. However, we get to know the staff at our hotel (last time at Le Meurice and before that at the San Regis) and it's comforting to see friendly faces at lunch and be close to "home". My husband is a type 1 diabetic and I like being near folks we "know". Also, there's something about all the hype about carbs and weight control. We do tend to lose weight when we travel due to all of the walking we do. Short story long...I am constantly worried about my husband and his "condition" when travelling. Yes, we've tried the "salad" for lunch but in Paris they love to serve "rocket salad". My hubby is a Romaine and iceberg guy. I know, I know-arugula is much healthier, but what do you do? I will admit, after having a bit of food poisoning the night before getting on a TGV to Montpellier and having nothing but hot tea for breakfast, the baguette with ham on the train was quite a welcome taste sensation. Something akin to cold pizza with a hangover. ;-)

Always a good idea to save some cash in Paris...or other places!

Quite pricey for something seemingly simple!

Who would have guessed that British "journalists" could be just as lazy as those everywhere else?

Kabul, you could find it, as I don't think it's forbidden to sell bacon. In Riyadh, I am not sure... Is it forbidden like alcohol there?

On a funny note, they had something that they called a club sandwich at lunch today...

In reality, it looked like two pieces of french toast with some cheese and a piece of ham bologna in the middle...
