What are the sights of Rotterdam we musn't miss Friday-Sunday in early-August?

Preferably using public transport. What weekend discount tickets are available?

Thanks for your help

Get yourself a public transport card (OV chipkaart) wherever you enter the country, it can be used on all forms of public transport in the country.

As for must see sights that does depend a bit on what you are interested in. Rotterdam has world class museums like Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Markthal is an interesting place to visit with funky architecture nearby. Hotel New York is a great spot for lunch or dinner.

There are some pretty good bike tours around if you're into that - there's always inventive architecture around the city. The Kijk-Kubus and Erasmusbrug are probably the most famous, but the tours can show you more. The waterbus is a good way to see the city from the river, too.

Hoek van Holland has impressive dunes and some nice beach cafés. The railway line's currently closed for conversion to metro, but there's a replacement bus service (will make you feel right at home in the UK...) If you're interested in the industrial port, there are also waterbuses from here that take you right through it).

If you fancy some more 'old Holland', Delft is a 12 minute train ride away.

Was there 2 weeks ago for 2 days...

If you want to see windmills, the boat to Kinderdijk is pleasant and included if you get the Tourist Day Ticket. The exhibits are kind of cool and it's a pretty sight.

I was underwhelmed by the Hotel New York - It's not near anything and is cool looking from the outside (really the only thing you can see besides the restaurant and immediate lobby).

Walking around the center city and taking in the modernist architecture is an activity in and of itself.

The cube houses are cool but paying the admission fee for a 5 minute visit seems a ripoff.

Markthal is a cool looking building but the inside food market is similar to any other city. It's right by the cube houses though as is Witte Huis. Convenient to hit all 3.

Delftshavn is worth a visit as well.

The Dutch photography museum is in Rotterdam if you like that.

If you are interested in classic art, a trip to the hague to visit the mauritshuis and escher in het paleis is also worth a day trip. The cafès on the Plein or those on the Plaats are a nice people watching opportunity.
