And the Top 20 Countries in Europe For Welcoming Hotel Staff Are...

According to a survey conducted by Hotel.info, Finland just barely managed to take the top spot when it comes to the countries in Europe with the most welcoming hotel staff. Germany and Austria tied for a close second. The Netherlands ended up at the bottom of the top-10 list and the UK didn't even make it on the list.

So with 40-odd countries in Europe altogether, a top 20 list? And the UK still doesn't make it? Impressive.

Disgraceful - my daughter who used to work on Front Desk for the Marriott in NW England would be ashamed.

An Austrian friend of mine was astonished when he called on me at my hotel in Vienna and was met with friendly and cheerful staff. IME the Finns would be at #2, and then there was this Lars von Trier-esque exchange at the Hilton in CPH

Me: Did my upgrade request go through?
Clerk: Yes, we put you in a room that only opens from the outside.

I just got back from Vienna, the hotel staff were lovely. Maybe it helps if you speak German?

I do over 200 hotel nights a year in Europe and I would agree that the Nordic countries are right up there with friendly staff. However in the case of Stockholm and Oslo for instance, it's mostly outside foreign talent that have been brought in to staff the hotels.

It's weird that in London and many other parts of the UK it is also outside foreign staff at the hotels, but they are nowhere near as friendly.

And for me, Vienna hotels are very friendly!
