Question Switzerland Preferences???

I will be joining a river cruise in Basel in December.

As to where to fly in to, should we consider other locations (Zurich, Geneva, etc?) to fly in to and spend a day or so?

Any preferences/recommendations would be much appreciated.

Also, if other than Basel, any recommendations as to transporation TO Basel from the optional city?

Thank you in advance to anyone who responds!

This one is easy. I've done it.

ZRH is closest and has many more flights than GVA.

Take the pleasant train from the lower level of ZRH to Basel HBH. Enjoy your morning coffee and the grey December sky. Then a taxi to the river.

BTW, the train ride takes only 80 minutes.

2nd class on the train is fine for this trip. It is FAR better than Y on a plane and all bags go overhead.

I'll second this recommendation. Moreover, the OP should be sure to look into the "Swiss Transfer Ticket", which is a discounted fare that may well be applicable to his situation.

cheers,

Henry

There are direct non-stop flights from to Berne from Paris Orly and Munich.

Berne is a beautiful city and just an hour away from Basel by direct train.

I agree - Berne is beautiful, with typical Swiss architecture and charm. You can easily spend half a day to a day exploring the town on foot and/or public transportation.

Geneva isn't too interesting.

I'll agree that Berne is nice. Can't comment on Geneva since I haven't been there. Hoping to get back to Berne soon and use it as a base to visit nearby towns/cities such as Thun, Neuchatel, etc.
