NBO - flight time

Given the recent situation in Yemen, EY increased their flight timings from AUH to NBO in order to avoid Yemeni airspace. I took a flight to NBO last month and it was scheduled for 6 hours.

Now, however, the flight times have reduced to around 5 hours. Does this mean that EY are flying through Yemeni airspace again? Recent flights on Flightaware seem to suggest that they are.

Thanks.

While I can't speak for Etihad in particular, most carriers are now able to route to East Africa via P304/R402 HAI UB400 MOGDU since 13MAY15. This avoids Yemen territorial airspace, but utilises Sanaa Oceanic airspace.

Looks like they did VEDET UM634 DAROT UB403 MAV UA405 NV. Similar route to UB400 but over Ethiopia rather than Somalia.

Due to closure of Yemen’s airspace, Etihad Airways is re-routing a number of its flights to and from destinations in Africa.

As a consequence Etihad Airways’ Seychelles, Johannesburg and Nairobi services will have a longer flight time.

Etihad Airways is working to ensure the impact of the longer flight times is minimised and the airline is keeping guests informed and updated.

Safety is Etihad Airways’ number one priority. *JS

Yemen airspace is not "closed". Please don't mislead people with lies. The airspace remains open, but UAE GCAA has banned A6- registered aircraft from flying through there with the exception of UB400/UB403/UB404 airways. Your own Etihad flights fly through Yemen airspace every single day, as do hundreds of other aircraft.

Hi there,

Following a review of the Yemen airspace closure, the United Arab Emirates General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has authorized all UAE airlines to resume operations over a small part of Yemeni airspace that passes over the high seas and is unaffected by the current conflict areas in Yemen.

As a result, Etihad Airways has been able to reduce the time taken for its flights to and from Africa that were previously re-routed to fly around Yemeni airspace.

Safety is, and will always be, our number one priority at Etihad Airways and will continue to monitor the security situation closely.

Thank you. *JS

With all due respect, Yemen airspace has never been "closed". There have been flights in and out of Sanaa and Hodeidah pretty much every day since the conflict started. GCAA restricted UAE carriers from flying through OYSC FIR, but carriers registered elsewhere have been able to fly through Yemen airspace throughout the conflict if they so chose (and their insurers were willing to let them do so).
