If you sort by class U sits in the Economy section so I'm guessing it could be an upgradeable economy fare? 9 doesn't mean ONLY 9 seats left I think it means at least 9 left? I'm more familiar with BA's codes so over to the EK experts.

U is a new fare class recently introduced by EK. I am assuming it is the most expensive fare bucket because rhe only tickets I have seen booked in U are tickets on a J/C fare class basis where the flight was showing J0C0

Example:
Code:
Karachi, Pakistan to Toronto, Canada: 7620 miles 17 hrs 40 min

Emirates Flight EK605 on an Airbus A330 (jet) in business class
     (meal)
Departs Karachi, Pakistan (KHI) Fri, July 4 5:45a 2 hrs 0 min
Arrives Dubai, United Arab Emirates (DXB) 6:45a
1 adult in booking code C, covered by fare (A1) below

Layover in Dubai 1 hr 50 min
Emirates Flight EK241 on a Boeing 777 (jet) in coach class
     (meal)
Departs Dubai, United Arab Emirates (DXB) Fri, July 4 8:35a 13 hrs 50 min
Arrives Toronto, Canada (YYZ) 2:25p
1 adult in booking code U, covered by fare (A1) below

Toronto, Canada to Karachi, Pakistan: 7620 miles 21 hrs 50 min

Emirates Flight EK242 on a Boeing 777 (jet) in business class
     (meal)
Departs Toronto, Canada (YYZ) Wed, July 23 9:40p 12 hrs 55 min
Arrives Dubai, United Arab Emirates (DXB) Thur, July 24 6:35p
1 adult in booking code C, covered by fare (A2) below

Layover in Dubai 6 hrs 55 min
Emirates Flight EK604 on an Airbus A330 (jet) in business class
     (meal)
Departs Dubai, United Arab Emirates (DXB) Fri, July 25 1:30a 2 hrs 0 min
Arrives Karachi, Pakistan (KHI) 4:30a
1 adult in booking code C, covered by fare (A2) below

Note: The flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Dubai (DXB) is overnight.
Note: The flight from Dubai (DXB) to Karachi (KHI) arrives early in the morning.

Fare (A1): EK KHIYTO CRT1 fare (rules) PKR 129110
Fare (A2): EK YTOKHI CRT1 fare (rules) PKR 129110
Tax: Pakistani Federal Excise Duty PKR 5700
Tax: Pakistani Embarkation Fee PKR 1000
Tax: Canadian Air Travelers Security Charge C$17.00

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total for 1 adult passenger: $4126.80
(as of Wednesday, April 30, 2008 12:09am; fares loaded Tuesday, April 29, 2008 3:04pm)

U class is an economy class booking code. However, it is used as the booking class on Business tickets when Economy is full. Another example. Suppose John was flying from LHR to MCT via DXB in F class. If the DXB-MCT flight did not have F, he would be booked in J, the highest business class fare bucket. J is still business (and he'd be in business) but it is just an expensive fare bucket. Similarly, someone in U class would still be booked (and sitting) in Economy even on a business class ticket.

Cheers,
