Emirates picks Rolls-Royce for 50 A380 engines.
Airline likely to make a major business announcement in London on Friday.

This could be a sign of support to Rolls Royce for future NEO orders.

In short, $$$$$$
Both directly (savings) and to pressure GE/Boeing on price on the introduction of the 777X (Sir Tim saying, we have absolutely no qualms about retooling our maintenance systems to support a different manufacturer, so don't take us for granted - we might just reinstate our A350 order).
Also another ally in RR on poking Airbus about the A380neo - which would be powered by the Trent XWB.

I'm curious to see whether this is a hint towards a A380 NEO launch at the DXB airshow this year. If it is, I would guess that there will be a supplementary order of A350s too, as the selected 'regional' aircraft for EK. This is because the A380 NEO is supposed to have a trent XWB derivative engine used, which is the same that the A350s have.
So EK could pull off some massive economies of scale, by having two engine types (once the A380 CEO is retired), and two pilot groups if MFF is approved between the A350 and A380.
