I have read through the website and I think it is clear that if I fly Bangkok to Jakarta on Garuda Airlines and they accept/have ability to check my bags all the way to Dubai, that it should work. The tickets are 2 separate tickets, but I can be checked in for both flights as they are within a few hours (arrive 17:30 and EK flight at 00:40)

I just thought to ask if anyone has done that, or if there is any advice to ensure my bags make it onto the EK flight and don't get stuck in customs or something? Probably hitting the transfer desk and lounge with bag tags, but how risky is it to try it? Would prefer to skip immigration and baggage claim in Jakarta simply to drop off bags at the EK desk…but don't want to wait a day or 2 for bags to appear in Dubai!

My list may be out of date, but it doesn't show an interline agreement between Emirates and Garuda so you may have to pick up your luggage and check it in again,

Fortunately, as you have > 7 hours transit time you should be able to do this.

Routing is odd I will admit, but accommodating multiple passengers and conferences in Dubai first then Jakarta, so wanted the direct Dubai-Jakarta for the transit in between.

BUT I will say awesome service from Garuda. First as DL plat I had fast track and lounge in Bangkok, bags checked through to Dubai, opened a bulkhead row for me on the plane, then on arrival here in Jakarta they had a sign and 2 agents to meet me, take me to the Skyteam lounge to wait, take my passport and verify boarding pass and luggage transfer then escorted me (most of the way) to the Emirates lounge (called Premier Lounge in Jakarta). I will still have to see if the bags actually arrive in Dubai, but very impressed by Garuda service and friendly staff at each step from check-in to lounge. Fingers crossed Emirates gets the bags!
