Mobile/Cell Phones

Not sure if there is a thread elsewhere about this but couldn't find one.

I need to get my dad a new cell phone. He has Parkinson's which has given him swollen fingers and taken away some of his dexterity. He uses an old Blackberry Bold sufficiently but has struggled mightily with touchscreens. The BB is rapidly dying so we need to get him a new one. The original BB was purchased back when they were common and he has also deteriorated since then. He's also lost a bit of eyesight.

I'm very familiar with the Apple/Samsung regular offerings, but with the evolution to most devices being touchscreen I'm struggling with where to start to find him something. He also doesn't really need all of that functionality as he pretty much only needs to talk and text. Any resources to recommend?

An iPhone 7 Plus or 6S Plus (or 6 Plus) since it fits big hands and has a large screen easy to see and text can be set to larger sizes.

Pair it with a leather or silicone case so it will not slip out of his hands.

But you know your father better so choose whats just right for him.

I agree with the suggestion above. I got my dad a basic quick messaging phone with larger buttons and he was very bummed not to get an iPhone. We put it in an Otterbox in case it falls out of his sweatpants pocket. Adjust it using font size controls and accessibility features and you probably will do just fine.

A visit to an Apple store to meet with someone who can demo those features for you might help you decide.

If he's happy with BB and would rather not learn a completely new OS, you could get him a BB Classic. It's a tad bigger than the Bold, has BB10, but still has a keyboard.

You could almost certainly find a very similar Blackberry, perhaps new old stock or refurbished, on Amazon, eBay, etc.
