Challenge Issued: SLC to MIA or FLL under $400 before 2/28/2013

I need to get out of the persistent cold in Utah and have two vouchers for $400 (one for me one for my Mom) from Delta. We would like to end up for a few days in Ft Lauderdale or Miami area-am relatively flexible in terms of when I go but would like to include a weekend.

You all have crowd sourced and helped me before. Any idea how I could make this happen for my Mom and I?

Thanks in advance!

With a few minutes of searching.

Book as multicity SLC-DEN, DEN-FLL and back.

I would encourage you to just pay the extra $94 pp that it will cost to book a one stop ticket though

Why?? This is cheaper AND earns more miles. I would DISCOURAGE you from paying the extra $94 pp for a one stop ticket

Excellent post. For those of you SLC based flyers (looking to save money) going East or SouthEast, flying to Denver and then to your destination can save you a lot of money. In general, fares are much lower out of Denver than SLC. You can book these as a multi-segment ticket on Delta.com (segment 1 is SLC to DEN, segement 2 is Den to your destination, etc) ... but Delta.com doesn't usually give you routings via Denver by default.

DL.com will never (afaik) give you routings through DEN ex-SLC without specifically asking for it because connecting in DEN will trigger a fare break. DL fares ex-DEN are also cheaper because its a competitor's hub. This trick also works at many other DL hubs. Just figure out which nearby UA/US/AA hub has frequent cheap short-haul DL service, and search for your longhaul DL fare ex-competitor-hub, and combine the two.

MSP-ORD/MDW is a great way to chop hundreds of dollars off ex-MSP fares. But it's only occasionally worth the extra hassle to me.

Interesting. I'll have to pay more attention in the future.

I think it might depend on the other market that is involved.

I have seen the 'Denver advantage' before-it is interesting and it does make a difference, often significant. Since I'm originally from Denver I consider it awesome!
