DL/AMEX Gold - Retention hopes?

Just got dinged with the annual fee and while last year I was able to sweet talk my way into getting it waived, this year they aren't budging. Is this worth another call or are they not as generous as they used to be?

Thanks!

What is your down side of calling again (aside from time) if you have to call again to cancel the card anyway?

I would try it. Sometimes rep roulette pays off!

I'm not one to share stories about swings and misses, but I talked to Delta AMEX retention last weekend. I mentioned I just got the SPG AMEX CC (true and, of course, verifiable) and was thinking about dropping the Delta AMEX (before the annual fee hit in 2 weeks).

CSR said (paraphrase), "Yeah, dropping the Delta AMEX sounds like the right thing to do..." And then he said I wasn't eligible for any miles bump or annual fee reduction.

Seems about par for the course here...

Ninety-five dollar annual fee hit after having card for one year. $4000 spend. Called Amex. Asked for waiver. Threatened to cancel card. They took $75 off the fee. Kept card.

AF hit a month+ ago, and was hoping to get some kind of offer or waiver, but Nothing. CSR even said "We have no ability to waive the annual fee." Of course we know that's not really true. I only had modest spend on card, maybe around $2000-$3000 for the year.

To be fair, my understanding is that depending on the department they are in, some agents can waive fees and some cannot.

Mostly just the retention officers can waive fees. The other agents can usually grant large amounts of SkyMiles very easily, though.

Last year, after spending about 50K on my Delta Platinum, I called Amex when the annual fee hit. They wouldn't budge on the fee, but a retention specialist did throw 12,500 miles my way, which were deposited while we were on the phone.

I plan on doing the same this year when the time comes, we'll see how it goes.

Interesting. We spend in excess of $100k/year. I was thinking of cutting things off after $60k, but an annual fee waiver on the reserve would certain change that thinking.

However, business credit cards carry fewer consumer protections.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the end of AF waivers in all cases, now that Amex is becoming more and more desperate to get every last penny.

When I tried to get a waiver on my gold card last year, I was offered a paltry 5K miles instead. Ended up upgrading the card anyway in the end.

To be clear you are trying to go THREE years without paying a fee -- pushing the envelope a bit no?

You do know AMEX has a small thing called a CRM system?

They know every single time you call, what you called about, and odds are stuff is being recorded.

With that said calling DL on roulette because you know you should be getting something and one agent does not know how to do it and one does is different.

Its the boy who cried wolf, say you will cancel enough years in a row, or play the whole roulette game and eventually retention will say "OK we will process your cancellation right away"

The customers is NOT always right.

Sometimes ALL businesses make a calculated decision to say X customer is not worth the business anymore and will walk away.

So on a different note while I dont like paying annual fees every credit card I have with an annual fee provides benefits that far outweigh the annual fee.

The DL card gets free luggage which pays for itself.

I have hotel credit cards where I get a free nights stay at every annual fee, the free night far outweighs the annual fee.

There are plenty of no annual fee credit cards, if people dont like paying annual fees use those.
