Skymiles Marketplace for Hotels

If anyone has experience with booking a hotel through Skymiles Marketplace, I would love to hear how it went. What kind of confirmation do you receive? Any problems at check-in? Any hidden costs?

I'm planning a trip to Rome for May. Within a couple of weeks, I will have enough miles to cover the flight, or cover the hotel. Since I have read how hard it is to book award travel, I was thinking of just paying for the flight, and using the miles for the hotel.

Any thoughts or advice? Thanks in advance for your help.

I've just recently tried it for the 1st time myself. You get a page on the Delta Skymiles Marketplace after confirming the transaction, with the following info:

Confirmation: 9529xxx Supplier confirmation: xxxF111581
Check-in Fri 04/30/10 Check-out Sun 05/02/10 Nights: 2
Room type: Double Room
Occupants: 2 Adults
Name
Address

Hotel Address

I followed up by emailing the hotel in Milan to ask some other questions regarding best transport from MXP to the hotel, and about some attraction tickets in the area, and they replied back quickly, and in the process confirmed my reservations. No idea how the actual check-in will go !

Given the problems in finding decent award inventory, this may be how I zero out my SM account. Sad that those were mostly NW piles, a program where miles used to be worth something.

I used the Marketplace for hotel reservations in Madrid and San Francisco, in both cases receiving an email with reservation confirmation. I'm taking the Madrid trip in February and will post on the experience.

In general, it seems like the hotels in Europe offer better redemption values than US cities. Big brand hotels are fairly expensive in miles no matter where, but the lesser known hotels I chose had decent reviews on TripAdviser and were in exactly the neighborhoods I wanted.

Considering the incompatible goals of redeeming miles for flights while flying enough to retain status (I'm a casual flyer with limited vacation time), using miles for hotels is a great alternative, IMHO.

Thank you everyone! I think I will use the miles for a hotel.

I did notice the same situation with hotels in Europe having better deals than those in the US. While researching, and also using Tripadvisor, I was quite surprised at the selection of good basic and better hotels there were to choose from in Rome. In fact, the hotel I stayed at this past November, and really liked, was included in the selections.

Good to know you get a confirmation sent to you, and that a hotel recognizes it quickly. I'm the type that has to go with confirmation in hand, no matter how smooth it all went, even if I have spoken to the hotel. Just gotta have it.

Thank you all for your input!

I can confirm no difficulties with the hotels

I used a Marketplace reservation this past weekend in a large European city and upon check made sure the desk recognized it as prepaid. They said yes, and there were no problems at check out. No hidden fees or taxes.

This has turned into my favorite aspect of redeeming SkyMiles. No problems whatsoever.

I posted in an old post about redeeming SkyMiles for a Christmas/New Years stay for a week at the Hilton Prince Kuhio in Honolulu for approximately 11K miles per night (far better the approximate one cent per mile redemption). Not only did the hotel provide a great oceanfront view on a high floor, but I was surprised that, when I returned, the nights actually counted toward my Hilton Honors elite status.

In my opinion, a GREAT alternative than just using miles for flights.

Also, remember, that the miles you spend include taxes, which could be substantial in certain cities.

EDITED: Also just remembered that when I arrived, was surprised that my redemption also included $75 for every three days for food/drinks. Not sure if it was a mistake by the hotel, but all food charges were comped at the end.

This sounds like a MAJOR DEAL for a small amount of miles, WOW!

I just went back and took a look at the reservation, and I was wrong about the number of miles used per night -- it came out to around 16,500 per night. Still, for a holiday reservation for an ocean front room, with everything else I mentioned, I still think this was a great deal.

One caveat

It seems like Hiltons, and other well known brands, start around 16,000 per night and go up. Not a bad price though, especially if you get stay credits too!

One thing to remember about Marketplace redemptions: unlike flights, the miles are not refundable if your plans changes, not even if you pay a redeposit fee. Ditto for merchandise and gift card redemptions.

I want to thank you all for pointing this out. I didn't know you could use miles for hotels. I just got a very reasonable deal for a higher-end hotel in Rome for the second half of March. I wouldn't have known about it if you hadn't posted.

SkyMilesInsider just posted that the new Marketplace officially launched today, so I would expect an email to members shortly. I hope broader awareness won't lead to supply constraints—there were reports of gift card supplies running out before Christmas.

It is almost incestuous. I can use Marriott points to purchase either travel packages including hotels and miles, or just miles alone to be used for airline tickets, and I can use Delta miles to purchase Marriott or other hotel chain hotel room nights. And I never knew about being able to use DL miles for hotel before yesterday.

I couldn't find this until the last page before booking. The red bolded stuff is mine.

Draconian T&Cs

well, those are indeed pretty draconian terms and conditions.

has anybody tried to use the Marketplace search system?

I just tried to search for "2 rooms, 5 guests" at the Marriott Chicago Magnificent Mile and I got the suspiciously low mileage rate of ~48k miles for two nights.

To double-check I tried "1 room 2 guests" and got the same mileage rate (~48k for 2 nights).

This makes me think the "number of rooms" feature does not work, and it actually shows one room only, so i wonder what would happen if I went ahead and reserve, would I only got one room?
