DL moving the rest of their South American flights to MIA?

There are rumors that say that DL is interested in moving their BOG,CCS, SCL, and GRU operations to MIA. It seems like a very good idea, because you have very good O &D traffic from MIA to SA.

Won't happen. It would mean going up against AA, UA, and all the South American carriers. Also Delta has weak domestic feed into Miami, with no service to DFW or the NYC area. DL is bigger at FLL then they are at Miami.

Why would they move all their South American flights out of their major hub?
I guess that's why it's called rumors...

On other boards, Flyertalkers are discovering that the Fonseca's rumors are often just naive wishfulness on his/her part.

S/he once suggested on the Lufthansa forum that "according to many good sources" LH would begin MUC-MIA service. There were no sources... (Sorry I don't know how to link to the posting.)

Since there is nothing published on this and for the excellent reasons posted above, this "rumor" is likely just idle speculation on Fonseca's part.

rcs85551, because MIA, unlike ATL does have the O&D market to/from South America. Dl has 9 flights a day to MIA. 8/9 are operated by 767's. That is not little.

There is a bigger O&D for Brazil from NYC, same is true of Argentina - DL dropped EZE and GIG becase of the soft economy in the region.

Unless every single one of those 767s are full of high-yield pax and continuing on to their respective int'l destinations... then yes, it's little.

Miami is the #1 O&D market between the US and every South and Central American country. In fact, Miami-Sao Paulo (6 daily flights) and Miami-Buenos Aires (4 daily flights) are the second and third largest US-South America O&D pairs (#1 is Caracas, though that is not likely to hold for long).

United is discontinuing service to four international destinations as well as reducing capacity in some markets...

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...d_centers_dc_1

MIA-SCL: Discontinued; Reaccomodation on DL through ATL
MIA-CCS: Discontinued; Reaccomodation on DL through ATL
MIA-EZE: Downgraded from a 777 to a 763

So it seems like those routes ex MIA do not bring significant revenue... if UA cannot stay in that market, there is no way DL will take over. However, good for DL as they will reacommodate UA pax affected by the cancellation of the SCL/CCS flights.

I heard a rumor that Delta is going to move most of their Western Europe flights to Dallas. What do you think of that?

Delta will be trying to move their hub away from ATL to MIA so as to better compete with AA in that market. All flights to/from ATL will be operated by ASA from April 1.

Simultaneously, the CVG hub will close as a presence is built at ORD. The only flights that will remain from CVG will be service to ORD, DFW, and MIA, all on RJs.

So where does that leave the multiple dailies to Asia.... out of BOS/MCO?
