Not Good: Old Miles being consolidated with SkyMiles

Just got this e-mail:

SkyMiles Program Change

Dear mk92,

Since you are a long-time Delta SkyMiles member, you likely know we have
been making changes at Delta to enhance your travel experience and to
make it easier for you to do business with us. These include improving
the comfort of our aircraft cabins, simplifying our U.S. fare structure
with SimpliFares(tm) and reducing certain service fees, improving
delta.com, simplifying the SkyMiles Medallion(r) program, and much more.

As we continue to simplify and improve the SkyMiles program, I'd like to
make you aware of an upcoming change that will be implemented at the end
of next year. Your account currently contains two separate types of
miles: one balance was accumulated in the older Delta frequent flyer
program that ended in 1995, and the second balance contains miles that
have been earned in the current SkyMiles program since 1995. In order to
streamline the tracking and redemption processes, we will be
consolidating these mileage balances on December 31, 2006.

Anytime from now until December 31, 2006, you may redeem your older
Delta frequent flyer miles or donate them to a charity by calling
SkyMiles OneSource(tm) at 1-800-325-3999. If you choose not to redeem or
donate your miles by this time, each mile will automatically be
converted into one mile in the current SkyMiles program and added to
your balance in January 2007. You may redeem these miles like any other
miles in your SkyMiles account, subject to all SkyMiles program rules.

The award-winning SkyMiles program currently has one of the most
generous expiration policies of any airline, which only requires that
you earn, redeem, or donate at least one mile within a three-year
period. Please click below
to learn more about all the ways you can redeem and earn miles through
our partners, including your continued use of the Delta SkyMiles Credit
Card from American Express(r).

A loyalty program that brings value to your Delta travel experience,
like multiple mileage earning and redemption opportunities with
attractive partners, underscores our commitment to provide you with a
safe, reliable and rewarding travel experience. As we continue to
transform our airline, let me assure you that preserving and improving
your SkyMiles benefits remains a top priority. We appreciate your
support and value your input as we work to create a better Delta for
you.

Thank you for your business and loyalty over the years. We look forward
to serving you in 2006.

Sincerely,

Paul Matsen
Chief Marketing Officer

All DL miles to be consolidated into SkyMiles.

Just received an email from Delta saying that all unused old Frequent Flyer miles will be consolidated into SkyMiles effective December 31, 2006. At least they gave us a year and a half to redeem old FF miles for the better awards.

So much for using those "Old" miles for retirement

Another enhancement. Was this part of an earlier class-action settlement?

I don't know about that but this changing in the rules has me boiling mad. Maybe enough of us with high mileage can get a class action suit going.

I'm sorry, but after 10 years, I can't blame DL for doing this. You've had plenty of time to use these miles.

Maybe we can get them to waive all capacity controls/blackout dates so we can use these up!

I've only got 100K FF miles or so, but I'm just hoping that ALL of my miles (FF + SM) are not devalued under the guise of bankruptcy.

and I just learned the difference between "old" miles and new miles

I just learned the difference between old miles and newer miles, so I'm just figuring out how I can use them....especially since we no longer have status.

Since we no longer have status, then the "old" miles seem to work as new miles...and I was thinking how to get status to use them....now I better hurry up and figure this out.

Anyone know of a quick way to make status....and I learned about that one flight status out of Providence too late. (

I have to agree. I was wondering how long it would take DL to get around to this.
I've been slowly burning my old miles over the years to the point where I have >40K old miles out of my total of 1 MM+ SkyMiles.
And at least they gave everybody 16 months to use them.

ConnFlyer... if you traveled every week like I do, you rarely have the time to use them. I've been on the road for almost 20 yrs now. I was hoping to use these miles when I retired. I wouldn't be so upset if they gave us more than a 1-1 value when moving to Skymiles.

Sorry Conn Flyer, I cannot agree; that may work for you, but it doesn't for the entire community.

Some of use continue to feed the Delta trough to keep status as they enhance us year after year; consequently, I'm forced to be a gatherer of miles, not a user, else I turn into a "Gold." DL can argue all they want that this simplifies the books, but it's only a trivial programming exercise. There's got to be more to it. My bet is that the "Old" miles are being carried differently in accounting space than the "New" miles and they want to exploit any encumbered resources set aside to service the debt commitment.

I won't be retiring soon enough to take advantage of that long-term investment that I made in DL and continue to make when I have discretionary control over travel. Gator's 75K 2FC HNL opportunity is one of several that I planned for in retirement. DL is only going to affect their longest term clients, if not their most loyal, with this move.
