When is the latest I can activate my 2017 DM choice awards
If you make DM in 2016 for 2017 when is the latest you can activate the choice awards?
Goal: the BF made gold on his own in 2016 for 2017, can I activate in Jan of 2018 and choose gold for him thereby granting him gold for all of 2018?

No being DM I may have this wrong but my understanding was that you can gift status for the time period you have status. So no your could not gift the BF GM status for 2018 unless you requalified for DM for 2018.

Here are the Status Gift Choice Benefit Terms and Conditions:
You have until 1/31/18 to make 2017 Choice Benefits selections.
Your 2017 gifted status and your BFs 2017 earned status will expire on the same day (1/31/2018) so there isn't a way to do as your are suggesting.
Gifting Gold or Silver Medallion Status to a recipient
Gifted Medallion status can only be gifted to a recipient who currently has no Medallion status or status below the gifted level. Gifted Medallion status will be effective within 48 hours of selection and digital Medallion credentials can be found in the Fly Delta app. For selections made for 2016 Choice Benefits, recipient status is valid through January 31, 2017; for selections made for 2017 Choice Benefits, recipient status is valid through January 31, 2018.

The gifted status is good through the time periods in the T&Cs. There is no requirement that the gifter maintain status.

Yes and no. There's no specific requirement. However the status is only good until the end of the elite the benefit is for. Thus 2017 gifted FO/GM status expires Jan 31, 2018 regardless of if it's selected in Jan 2018. Thus the gifter does have to have status since the gifted status runs concurrent to the elite year.

Note also, "Gifted Medallion status can only be gifted to a recipient who currently has no Medallion status or status below the gifted level." So you'd have to wait until BF's own GM expires first.
