Today marks the final commercial flight of the first Boeing 747-400. Currently operated by Delta Air Lines, tail number N661US was delivered to Northwest Airlines in 1989. She ends her 27-year career by flying the lengthy Honolulu to Atlanta nonstop this morning, and will then find a cozy retirement among other historic aircraft at the newly revamped Delta Flight Museum at Altanta Airport.

To clarify:
This was the first 747-400 delivered to any airline, and was delivered to NW in 1989. There have been a few DL 747s that have been retired (and many more among other airlines). One of the retired frames was damaged by hail a couple of months ago.

Does anyone else find the caption on the lead image in the actual source article (from the linked article) suspicious? I don't know of any plane whose tires smoke on take-off. Or am I crazy?

27 years hardly sounds like it's average life (end of airframe cycle) of 747-400, or is it? I would have thought it could easily have another 7-10 years of safe flying.
Will miss it....

I got it late last month CDG-DTW. I noticed the lack of Wifi but when the Captain took of photo of me in his chair (before departure) he told me this was the original 747.

Yep, those birds were always cared for lovingly by the PMNW mechanics and crew, plus AFAIK at least most of them were fully paid for. Just like the DC-9s. RIP.

Whoa - when I did that earlier this year I got a 767 -must be because of Labor Day. EDIT just double checked -it was in November 2013 and it was indeed an A330. This year I went to HNL from SLC.
