In addition, one of the very few benefits of the updated IFE is that it shows the tail number. (I forget where exactly, perhaps on the map?)

There's a thread on the Flight Aware boards that they're not allowed to display the reg number for data licensing reasons.
In the box for flight number insert reg number (eg. N1604R) and it will display flight history for that aircraft
If you have a master list of Delta's reg numbers and which are in which configs it can really narrow search down. For example if a 738 has overhead monitors you do not need to search for N3744F to N3773D

Seems odd they can't publish tail numbers when we can deduce it backwards.

OP, for domestic flights, you can get the registration numbers at http://apps.bts.gov/xml/ontimesummar.../src/index.xml

It takes 2-3 months for the data to be included in this web site, so you have to wait a while. But it contains pretty much every domestic flight back to 1995.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 6_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/536.26 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0 Mobile/10B143 Safari/8536.25)
You can also access this data while on the plane. I never remember to grab the tail number before boarding, but if you jump on Gogo and click the button to chat with a representative (free), the tail number will be in the URL.

Another option is to look at FR24, but it only gives the last month of data.

As a bonus, if you plug in your flight number up to 24 hours before departure, it often will tell you which tail number your flight will be. ^
