SQ does also but I do not think they have a DL mileage award you can use to get past SIN. If you choose KE, I think it will take two awards to get there: one for ATL-ICN and another for ICN-AKL.

ExMo is right. It takes two award tickets... 60K to ICN and then another 60K to Christchurch. Add em up... 120K for a coach class ticket to New Zealand, Australia, or anywhere else DL DOESN'T fly.

I remember the days 5 years ago when one could (as I did) redeem an Air New Zealand award from DL. Northwest's access to Australia is also limited. 5 years ago, they operated LAX-SYD 3 times a week as well as a DTW-KIX-MEL which the Japanese said was cheating.

I never am able to find a UA codeshare flight on ANZ for award travel. When I checked with the Award Availability tool (when it actually WORKED ), it seemed to only show actual UAL flights. I thought if you wanted to fly ANZ that you actually had to redeem an ANZ award.

The flights numbered 4--- are code-shared on ANZ metal, i.e., 4351 and 4345 are LAX-AKL and 4444 is AKL-LAX. Never have had a problem using United miles to pull down these flights--just takes a little longer since there is a lag in terms of NZ's confirming the seat with United, but even that is just a matter of hours, at most. Not too many years ago when NZ was a partner of Delta's, it would take days because the NZ reservation system was pretty primitive. Enjoy NZ--it's wonderful.

I assume if it is a UA flight number (even though an ANZ flight), if I book a Business Class Award, I should get First Class on UA for the domestic leg (vs. getting a straight ANZ award, where I'd be in UA coach).
Am I correct with this assumption?

You have to call and be sure and request by flight number rather than saying you want ANZ. And, no, you don't get first class in the US for business class ticket on NZ; you get coach--hopefully they'll give you economy plus--they did for me.

All NZ-metal award travel (using UA miles) has to be booked under the NZ flight number with the exception of the connecting domestic US flights to HNL / LAX which can be booked using a UA flight number.

We wanted to fly LEX-MEL a while back. We've done the 28 hr non-stop coach horror before, more than once, and a long time ago I swore "Never Again!"
We do NOT fly transpacific non-stop - I suppose I could be convinced to make an exception for the true F sleeper cabin, but the likelihood of that happening is small, alas. So we work on the "island-hopping" plan.
Last trip was about 2 years ago. We took a DL award flight to HNL, and then - 24 hrs later, in case of problems - picked up an Air Pacific flight to AKL. That whole ticket was HNL-AKL-MEL-SYD-HNL for $700, with spotovers everywhere, incl 3 weeks of business in MEL. All the rest of the segments were on QANTAS. Not free, but a lot cheaper than we could have done it otherwise.
We're looking for doing something similar in May, and can probably do it better now, thanks to FT. 60K miles gets you F to HNL on DL, big whoop (although it's more important now that the old but comfortable-in-coach L-1011's are gone). Then we'll see. We have UA miles for the rest. ANZ HNL-AKL would be OK. It's about a 10 hr flight.
deltagold, keep investigating. I'll bet there are a lot of creative solutions out there.
