Do the Southbound trip (ANC-YVR or SEA).
Cruise line will depend on your family's tastes and needs. Keep in mind that some cruise lines, ie. Princess, restrict the number of children in each age group.
Each cruise line has a different policy in terms of minimum age of the child for the children's program, but all require that they be potty trained.

May is a great time to go, do try to finalize your plan as soon as you can - depending on your choice of ITN, airfares could take a big bite on your budget, but it's well worth it ....
P.S. In case you aren't aware, May is still COLD up north, dress warmly in layers, especially for the children - and Alaska has the most rainfall in N.A. so be prepared (don't let those sunny travel promo fool you) - whether on land or while at sea.
