Get someone to add you as an authorized user, get a Japan AmEx and do a global transfer for a cheap or no AF card.
When you get back to the USA let your report grow with that card and then apply for better cards.
I personally think USA cards give better rewards than non, and there are quite a few with no foreign transaction fees now.
