Its Official: EWR-MUC Announced

Continental Airlines Announces Daily Nonstop Service Between New York and Munich

Hub-to-hub link will provide additional travel options from March 2010

HOUSTON, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today announced that it will launch daily nonstop service between its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport and Munich, effective March 27, 2010.

"We are excited about launching service between New York and Munich, the largest German city not currently served by Continental and a hub for our new partner Lufthansa," said Jim Compton, the airline's executive vice president of marketing. "As well as extending Continental service to a new market in Germany, this hub-to-hub link will provide additional travel options and opportunities for our customers on both sides of the Atlantic."

Flight CO106 will depart Newark Liberty daily at 5:25 p.m. and arrive in Munich at 7:50 a.m. the next day. The return flight, CO107, will depart Munich's Franz Josef Strauss International Airport daily at 9:20 a.m. and arrive at Newark Liberty at 12:35 p.m. the same day. The schedule of the Continental service complements that of Lufthansa's existing daily New York/Newark-Munich service, which departs Newark Liberty about three hours later and Munich about six hours later.

The Continental flights will be operated by Boeing 767-200ER aircraft, seating 25 passengers in BusinessFirst and 149 passengers in economy class.

The new flight has been timed to provide convenient connections at Munich, where Star Alliance partner flights provide service to over 95 destinations in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and at New York/Newark with an extensive network of Continental flights to more than 100 destinations throughout the U.S., Canada and Latin America. Continental operates the largest hub in the New York City metropolitan area at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Munich, the capital of Bavaria and the economic centre of southern Germany, is the country's third largest city after Berlin and Hamburg, with a population of 1.3 million in the city and 5 million in the Munich Metropolitan Region. Famed for its historic and modern architecture and annual Oktoberfest beer celebration, Munich boasts a wealth of cultural attractions and institutions. Among the many world-renowned companies whose headquarters are in the city are Siemens AG (electronics), BMW (cars), MAN AG (trucks, engineering), Allianz (insurance) and Munich Re (re-insurance). Lufthansa operates a hub at Munich's Franz Josef Strauss International Airport, which is the second-largest airport in Germany after Frankfurt.

The new flights will offer Continental's award-winning BusinessFirst service. BusinessFirst features an extensive gourmet menu served with premium wines and champagnes created by Continental's Congress of Chefs and Sommeliers. International concierge service provides individualized pre- and post-flight services for BusinessFirst customers at 35 airports around the world. Customers traveling in BusinessFirst may also access any of Continental's 25 Presidents Clubs and more than 800 affiliated lounges worldwide.

Continental currently offers nonstop service between New York/Newark and Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg. In addition, the airline launched nonstop service from Houston to Frankfurt on Nov. 1, 2009. Munich will be the 30th destination in Continental's trans-Atlantic route network.

Continental Airlines is the world's fifth largest airline. Continental, together with Continental Express and Continental Connection, has more than 2,400 daily departures throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, serving 130 domestic and 132 international destinations.

Continental is a member of Star Alliance, which provides access to more than 900 additional points in 169 countries via 24 other member airlines. With more than 41,000 employees, Continental has hubs serving New York, Houston, Cleveland and Guam, and together with its regional partners, carries approximately 63 million passengers per year.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, Continental consistently earns awards and critical acclaim for both its operation and its corporate culture. For the sixth consecutive year, FORTUNE magazine named Continental the No. 1 World's Most Admired Airline on its 2009 list of World's Most Admired Companies. ^ Will see if LH will keep the big A346 in the summer or cut it down to a little smaller aircraft size.

Where does the B762 for this route come from?

I honestly think they could fill both flights in the summer given the connectivity on both ends of the route.

Good question about the 762.

Plus MUC is a breeze compared to FRA.

It's our new AMS, IMO, in terms of connecting ease.

Both times (Feb 08, Oct 09) I have taken the LH flight (before CO in Star) it was packed to the last seat! On the Oct return, they even had to downgrade two ladies from C to Y, meaning C and F must have been sold out!

Oh ya, big time. You guys will love it once you have tried it. 15 minute intl. connection, no problem whatsoever.

I would imagine they'll use the 762 off of TXL or BCN initially.... Haven't poked around in Res and looked, but the timing with the disappearing winter winds would allow for either of those two to shift back over to 757s.

More flying means more jobs..... ^

Absolutely. MUC is a great newer airport for connections, both to other flights as well as in to the city.

CO is receiving two new 772ERs next year. Compared to summer 2009, they will have new widebodied flights on IAH-GIG, IAH-FRA and EWR-MUC. But they're also cutting capacity to CDG and AMS, and probably FCO as well. Overall, they have enough aircraft to keep capacity on other routes.

Going into the city is actually not that convenient yet. The S-Bahn takes 45 minutes which I think is a lot but they will have an Express bahn at some point!

FCO is actually showing an increase in capacity this summer, two daily with 772/762.

Last summer CO40/41 was 764. FCO can always fill seats in the summer, even without the Alitalia connecting traffic. MXP will probably see less of the 764.

45 minutes with a train station in the airport is pretty good by U.S. standards.

In fact, even in European, there are a lot of airports with much worse connectivity -- BCN, VCE, and TXL come to mind.
