Seems like the logical move, the current airport is bursting at the seams already.

This was announced over a year ago and has been discussed for a few years.
The official approval was in January 2013.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beijing...tional_Airport
This will actually be the third airport. Not sure what will happen to Nanyuan airport. I guess it will be closed.

Building a new airport isn't going to help ameliorate the #1 reason behind delays in China.

Nanyuan (ZBNY) will be closed for civilian uses, according to old news. The only airline company (China United Airlines) there will be transferred to the new airport.

ZBNY is a very small airport compared to ZBAA, so it can be hard to satisfy future passenger demands. And I believe even if it's not abandoned, it would be converted to a military only airport.

Yeah, that's why the flight is always delays all the times. Due to slot restrictions. There is no room to bring new airlines in PEK and the airspace is very full.

Slot restrictions will not be much of an issue when/if the new airport is complete, but flow control on the Shanghai, HK, and ULN (most flights to Europe) corridors will continue to be a problem if further steps aren't taken to open things up more.

I would bet my life's savings against a 2015 completion date.

Kinda difficult to build an airport in one year, when the conceptual
design hasn't even been completed.

XINJIA-AN, CHINA — Only six years after opening what was the largest airport terminal in the world, Beijing this week gave the final green light for a new airport just as big, to open in 2020.
