Why are CBP officers so interested that I am traveling alone?

It's one of the first questions in assessing whether you are a smuggler/sex tourist/terrorist/criminal. Also, it's a question they often know the answer to because they have your airline booking records in front of them, so it's an honesty test also.

Sex tourism isn't a crime, terrorists typically don't buy multiple tickets on the same PNR or claim to be a family, I guess smugglers or criminals might travel as a group, that seems pretty far fetched that they would be traveling on the same PNR.

Sex tourism isn't a crime but the major sex tourist destinations are known for underage sex as well. While they can't actually prosecute for underage sex directly it is illegal to leave the country for the purpose of engaging in underage sex. Besides, what they're actually looking for with sex tourism is kiddie porn.
