Having a computer searched for child porn (and bestiality) when entering Canada from the USA is not normal. It's not like you were returning from Cambodia (or New Zealand).

And more importantly, what's the point of such a control? I mean, you can access everything from Canada as well. No need to cross the border. And there are plenty of ways to hide the stuff.

Came back from Thailand about a year ago (different trip from the OP) and was asked to turn on and log into my laptop. The officer asked me if I knew why - I said I had a pretty good idea - she confirmed that Thailand was "a country of concern" for child porn.

The ironic bit was that she never ended up searching the computer; Windows picked that time to install a bunch of updates that I'd been putting off; after about fifteen minutes of waiting for the installs to finish, she said "Do you have anything you'd feel unconfortable showing me on your computer?" When I said "No" she told me to pack up and leave.

Even if someone collected "bad stuff" while traveling abroad, wouldn't they store it in the 'cloud' (or the equivalent)--but NOT on their physical computer.

Criminals are stupid, including pedophile criminals.

Here's a cracking longread about an American convicted of having child pornography on his computer when returning from Thailand, who later skipped probation, moved to Cambodia, and began telling everyone he never did it and it was a different guy with a similar name.

Here's another thought. As you may know, law enforcement agents are allowed to lie to suspects.

Apparently, it's a known ruse for CBP officers to tell passengers they are looking for child pornography on their computers when they are really looking for something else entirely.

Here's a story about CBP seizing and searching a guy's computers for evidence of violation of Iran sanctions. They told him they were looking for child porn.

A lot of people aren't that technically savvy.
