TSA to buy iPhones and iPads for its Officers

This is a horrible idea!

The Mac Observer is reporting:

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration is planning to spend US$3 million on Apple equipment including Macs, iPhones, iPads, and AppleTV units. The purchase will be part of a secure mobile device pilot program the agency is launching.

The TSA will be purchasing about 1,000 Macs and about 1,000 iPhones and iPads over a three year period.
As if they don't already steal enough iPads and iPhones from passengers! (See this link for details). There's also the concern that they'll use the cameras on these devices to take inappropriate photos of passengers. For those foolish enough to go through the Nude-O-Scopes; they don't need photos of their genitals ending up on Facebook!

Well, I already own an iPhone and an iPad. I should be all secure then. Need to ask TSA whether that will get me a waiver from the groping service.

It's part of the give back program. They will leave them so the passengers can steal an equal number of them that their people have taken from the passengers. This is just the first order probably.

This just gives them something to play with while they stand around doing nothing.

I can't wait for the first TSA on TSA iPad stealing incident to happen.

What the yotz do they need with AppleTV units? Are they catching up on the latest episodes of Dexter in the perv box?

You guys are ridiculous. The reason for the purchases is to let the screeners play Words With Friends while either A) not doing opt-out patdowns or B) for the screeners making sure no one comes in the exit side of security. Seriously, where do you people get your crazy ideas?

Sorry to burst some bubbles, but these toys will be for the TSA DC staff only.

For what purpose? To what end? Seriously, Apple products are significantly costlier than competing products such as Blackberries, and are designed for the average consumer user, not a business or government user. In other words - a less capable product at a higher price.

And once again I ask - what the yotz do they need with Apple TV units? Those are strictly entertainment devices with no crossover into the business arena whatsoever.

I don't care what pay band receives them - they are products that are not designed for business or government use, which cost significantly more than the products which ARE designed for business and government use.

Are some of these I, J, and K band employees also issued government-owned Lexus' or Jaguars? Are they allowed to live rent-free in government-owned luxury condos?

This does not surprise me. Once again, this out of control agency is doing what it does best--wasting tax payer money.

Just like TSA employees when compared to any other humans on the planet.
