CX is considering to switch to piece system for baggage allowance

Just got an insight survey regarding this. The reason cited is to provide seamless transfer of baggage with other oneworld alliance members.

This is the proposed allowance

So in another words, they are trying to cut cost (again)
and reduce it to 1 piece for Economy pax to/from Americas.
This put them inline with Air Canada, and other TPAC carriers.

Thankfully, MPO elites won't be harmed too bad with this 'devaluation' and still have at least two pieces of allowance.

No modifications to carry on it seems? Being in the Americas this would impact me negatively but I tend to get by with a single checked bag between my wife and myself so wouldn't be a hardship in my situation.

Americas Premium Economy will see reduction as well.

It's for Central, North and South Americas. So it's not just the USA

Does anyone know how/why the Americas ended up on the piece system while every other region was on weight anyway?

Two things strike me about this proposal. First, they'd be effectively increasing the weight allowance for everyone who was not on the piece system before, despite fuel costs?

And they would reduce the allowance for PEY to North America? 2x25kg for PEY would have maintained the same allowance for North America and if fuel consumption is a concern on those ultra-longhaul flights, I would have thought that the dramatic reduction in EY weight under the new chart would more than offset the increases for every other cabin.

That's barely a reduction given:
a) It's only 2kg/pc less now. Most check in agents are pretty lenient and flexible with this already.
b) The number of PEY pax on any given flight vs. the # of Y pax.

why are other airlines unable to base their baggage at 30 kilos like Emirates does and go higher from there

MH offers 30kg even for Y too.
One of the very few things they do well in compare to other OW carriers.

JAL offers 2 x 23kg, so 46kg total for Y passengers system wide.

Hey look on the bright side - it's actually a relative value enhancement for MPO benefits!

I wouldn't mind going to a piece system as long as the extra charges for additional bags is not too high. I think the BA baggage allowances have settled at a good medium. Yes, GBP55 extra for a bag is not cheap, but it's a lot better than the old per kg charge. Plus BA gives good extra allowances not only to their own frequent flyers, but to all oneworld status holders.

So seems the biggest loser from this is Y Pax - especially going to the Americas.
However have they listed out the excess charges yet?
I think this is standard across some other Oneworld airlines (eg. BA).

So I assume for MPOs, for DM, it will remain the same at 1 Piece additional at 32Kgs and no more 20 Kg extra.

Will be interesting for SL - Maybe an upgrade as well to 1 piece??

Perhaps they are encountering the problem of some passengers checking in large amount of light-weighted, bulky luggage? i.e. from the CX prespective, space is more valuable than weight?
