Cathay 747 retirement schedule

Does anyone know when they will retire the 747 that usually flies out of SFO at 1:35PM? I heard that they are starting to remove those planes and will be replacing them with the new planes? My friends got a flight late summer and was wondering if they were going to just replace it with the new equipment suddenly.

Also, if there is plan to replace the 747's, will it be with the planes with the new business class seats? Those are currently being used for the 1am flight right? No more herringbone coffin seats this route once the 747 is retired right?

I thought the 744s are not getting replaced til the new 350-1000s hit which will be some time... 2017? Maybe the 359s can start replacing them if the 744s start hitting real tough maintenance issues.

But yeah, the 744s are the reason I don't fly UA ever.

This being the CX forum, we can discuss Cathay's 747 replacement program, which is well underway.

The 77Ws (either 77G or 77H) all have the new longhaul J.

Good idea. To start off with, there are no more 74A's in fleet. B-HKE and HUA have both been decommissioned already. I know that CX will retire six 747s before the end of this year, but not sure if that number includes the ones that have already been retired. Word from a CX pilot says that B-HUB will be one of the frames going bye bye this year too.

I heard that the last SFO-HKG 747 is on 8/31/14.

But CX is famous for making last minute changes.

F in 744 will always bring back great memories. Flying in the pointy end, seeing the curvature of the nose of the plane. Sitting in 1A/K and having nothing in front of you.

F in 77W doesn't have that cozy feeling. It somehow feels too exposed. Having the galley in front of the seats just doesn't feel the same.

Oh well, I will need to get some pics from www.fjiii.com framed in my bedroom ... looking at all those kids in 744 F makes me happy

Planning to book SIN-HKG-HND in F for December. Both sectors are scheduled to be operated by the 744 but I'm not sure if they'll stick around till then. How safe is it to count on the 744 still being in operation by year end?

Makes me sad to see the Queen being retired! I don't think I will ever turn left on her again

Shall we do a hnd run on the last day?(i suppose either hnd or kix would take the last flight of 744)

It will be an immensely sad day when these are all gone. 77 F cabin just isn't as special.

+1. I wish Cathay could arrange for a special event on the retirement of the last queen...
