I will just wait and see what happens. If they take away the Gold status, I will just apply again and tell them that I'm a shareholder who would like to take advantage of the shareholder benefits (not mentioning that I have used the offer before).
Selling and buying back will be the second solution. I don't think you would have to wait more than a day to buy back the shares and apply again, but hopefully we don't need to do this.

I was able to renew for 2014 by telling them I was a shareholder.
I have been downgraded to silver for 2015, but I'm not sure if I bother to apply for shareholder gold again since I'm not going to spend much time in hotels this year.
