Wildfire alert for Monterey County.

It started Friday morning (7/22) in the Soberanes area between Big Sur and Carmel. Friday night, it was estimated at 900 acres, Saturday 2,000 acres, and tonight 11,000.

As far as I know Highway 1 is open, but don't know if traffic's being controlled in anyway. Pfeiffer State Park is closed.

As of 24 July, 7:45 pm PT, the stats:

Fire engines: 168
Water trucks: 14
Helicopters: 7

I don't know if the Best Buddies charity cycling event between Carmel and Hearst Castle will happen the scheduled weekend of September 10-13 because the current Soberanes Fire containment date is August 31, but here's the link.

https://www.bestbuddieschallenge.org/hc/schedule/

The fire is currently 33,668+ acres and only 15% contained.

That's burning part of Garrapata State Beach, my favorite place for hiking in Big Sur.

My hopes and prayers are with those who live nearby, and those who risk life and limb combating the blaze.

The cause of the fire was determined Tuesday to be an abandoned illegal campfire.
http://www.montereyherald.com/genera...-officials-say

Tonight's update, 8/4, end of Day 14 -
51,200 acres
30% contained
5,552 personnel
57 homes, 11 outbuildings destroyed.
And unfortunately, one death. A bulldozer operator working fire lines.

They concentrated on clearing the perimeter on the north end because of the proximity of Carmel Highlands and Carmel Valley (populated areas). Progress, but the fire continues to grow.
