I've managed to book a oneway from SXF to BRU on FR for -8,96€*.
*The flight was 1,04€ via an OTA. A 10€ cashback promo on that specific OTA brought the price down.
For cheap flights, you'll have to pay attention to sales (e.g. the 1.300€ business class return to AKL on QR metal) and tipps. There's no universal formula for cheap flights.

A couple options:
(1) Various websites have simple "home to anywhere" options that show you generally where some cheap fares are. These are usually best to give you ideas, but often aren't querying for actual fare availability on your given date. For example, if I pull up "MCI to anywhere" in Google Flights, I can quickly tell where Spirit and Frontier fly...but just because I click on that $72 fare to Vegas doesn't mean there's actually availability there.
(2) Use ITA Matrix. Sometimes I'll go there, type in a city, set the "nearby" distance to 1000 or 2000 miles, and just see what comes back. (e.g., MCI to SFO+1000 miles returns pretty much anything "out west".) The good thing there is that the fares you see are usually real. And there are a lot of powerful filtering options...you can filter on airlines, segments, classes of service, or other factors.
There's an FT thread about the "poweruser" commands in ITA...maybe on the mileage run board?

I'd think Google flights was more useful for your specific needs than ITA. You can put in departure airport, date and other filters (times, alliance, non-stop etc) and then use the map which will show prices

We are asking you where you are located. Giving you tips for cheap travel from Sydney won't be very useful if you're based in Paris. Equally, lastminute.com won't be of interest if you are based in Santiago.
If you live in New York, you will be interested in flights from EWR, JFK, LGA.
You see where I'm going?

www.skyscanner.net
Type in your home airport (or country) as the origin and "everywhere" as the destination.
The site also allows you to search for the cheapest date within a given week or month.
