Budget Rent A Car Gives Out Your Credit Card Number To Scammers

I know this was covered five years ago, but I just got a "check" and have been researching the scam.

More On Negative Option Billing and Preaquired Account Marketing

So even though Budget Rental and Trilegiant are now separate supposedly companies, any time your rent with Budget they can give your credit card information to scammers.

According to the solicitation, the "membership" will be charged to the "credit card on file with Budget" and they "are not affiliated with Budget".

I am researching how they get around their credit card merchant agreement to perpetrate this.

I got that same check from "Just For Me" a couple days ago. The second blog link you posted seems to indicate that the scamming company could just charge anyone's credit card without authorization (i.e. me signing the back of and depositing that check). Is that how you read it as well? I periodically check up on my credit card transactions, but is there a specific offending merchant I should be watching for here?

This is so shady. I can't imagine it can be 100% legal.

The Cendant stepchildren are quite an evil web of companies. They are no stranger to scandal.

Trilegiant is about the worst. They should be shut down and those responsible for their scams imprisoned.

So I received another check from from Trilegiant today, "For Budget Customers". Upon signing the back of the the thing, one opts into the opportunity to get charged anywhere from $14 - $15 per month for something called "AutoVantage Gold".

There are no instructions on how to opt OUT of these checks. I'm worried that once I move residences, these checks will keep showing up long after I'm gone.
