How strict is AirAsia for weight of carry-on bags?

How strict is Air Asia with the 7kg limit for carry-on bags? Do they actually weight carry-on bags? I have no trouble staying within the dimensions, but I usually have more weight than that because of camera gear.

They tend to not be strict at all in my experience. My carry-on is always over-weight and too big. Check in is another matter.

Dumb question. In AirAsia this 7kg allowance is in addition to a Laptop bag. Correct?

I believe so yes.

Cabin bag of 7 kg + (laptop bag OR handbag).

Naturally, I pack all my lead in the laptop bag.

You shouldnt have problems unless your extra laptop bag look bulky. That of course is subject to the checkin personell of each airport you are departing from as what I have experienced.

Looking to fly PHN-DMK as AirAsia is chepest in January, but doubt I can keep my backpack under 7 Kg.

Any recent experience? My one and only flight was almost 10 years ago.

I fly this route all the time and I'm usually way overweight. If you're worried about it, pay 'em in advance. It costs a lot more at check in.

Poked around on their website, but never did find a price for overweight carryon. Suspect it would only show up during / after purchase.

And what is the penalty when one goes over 7 Kg?

You can buy 15kg. In fact I think you have to de-select it - like their stupid insurance. If you pay at check in, it's like 3X as much.

You have to either buy a 15kg package over the counter before they verify your documents, or get gate checked with a fee.

Seems like it's 1/2 price to pre-book check-in luggage compared to paying during check-in.

I only fly Scoot in terms of budget carriers, but with luggage costing so little I prefer to have several kgs to spare than end up with a horror check-in experience.

This is a very old thread, but anyone have experience with AirAsia out of MFM? I know they are more strict in SIN and KUL, I was able to sneak by them in KUL but it took some doing (they were weighing at check-in and also walking to security, but not at the gate). How is it at MFM? My rollaboard is standard international size and doesn't look crazy big but it's not one of the tiny spinners either.

As a general rule, expect them to be strict so you don't get screwed over with 3x the fee at the gate. Common sense for any LCC. Yes you CAN get away with it sometimes, but not always....and the time you get "caught" you pay WAY more for it than you originally had to.
