Two routes will be moving to LGW South ahead of the formal move date.

from 11 January 2017: BA2273 will depart for JFK out of the South Terminal
from 12 January 2017: BA2272 will arrive into the South Terminal from JFK
from 19 January 2017: BA Naples flights will operate in/out of the South Terminal
Customers on these flights should check in at Zone A within the South Terminal

from 25 January 2017: all other BA flights will operate in/out of the South Terminal.

The BA First and Terraces lounges in the North Terminal closed on the evening of 04 January 2016. BA passengers can now use the No.1 Lounge and My Lounge in the North Terminal until the date BA moves its operations to the South Terminal (currently estimated to happen in November 2016), where there will be a new British Airways lounge. The new British Airways lounge in the South Terminal is anticipated to follow the latest concept found at EDI, GLA, IAD, CPT and SIN, and will include a dedicated area for First and oneworld Emerald passengers. It is not yet clear what form this area will take (ie. whether it will be a separate First lounge or include a Concorde Bar/Dining concept). For more information, see here and here

For information on the temporary lounge arrangements in LGW North, see this thread:
Temporary BA Lounge at LGW North - No. 1 Lounge - Photos, reviews, questions
By way of guidance, the above Lounge thread is for direct questions and experiences on the No. 1 lounge, whereas the thread here below is suitable for discussing the broader issues arising from the move to South.

so many questions

- does this mean new lounges
- does this mean existing south carriers go north
- what does this say about BA's commitment to Gatters
- will there be route changes

According to a post on Business Traveller, it will involve the construction of a new lounge and check in area. Exciting!

1. There would have to be- the lounges are hardly going to be in a different terminal.
2. U2 and VS will move completely to North
3. It's not up to BA what terminal they're in. U2 is a far larger player at LGW than BA anyway.
4. Why would there be?

This has been on the cards for several years no, and given the recent investment into LGW South, this sounds like a rather excellent idea.

Processes/facilities such as security, immigration and lounges will be better than they currently are the the North terminal. Plus, for the many who arrive by train, there won't be the need to travel from the South to North terminal.

I suppose the downside is that BA are hardly likely to upgrade the lounges in the North terminal if they're going to be moving out in a year and a bit.

If that inside Gatters documentary was anything to go by, they would be devestated if BA moves out

This will be better for using the train and also, hopefully, better for those using the lounges as there'll be no more long treks over the bridge of doom.

I guess this is to do with the long rumoured Easyjet North terminal consolidation.

Good news all round I'd say.

I'm surprised this has been decided before the decision on an additional Gatwick runway/terminal has been taken.

The extra schlep to the North Terminal was never appreciated, and a new lounge will be good news. You only have to look at the recent retirement schedules for the 737s and new airbuses to see British Airways is committed to Gatwick; let's hope there will be an increased focus on longhaul flights, and a fleet renewal plan there in due course.

South Terminal is not the poor relation it once was.

Is Gatwick planning to extend one of the piers to accommodate BA?

I heard that it was mainly driven by the increasing presence of Easyjet at LGW, and their intentions to centralise operations in a single terminal (north).

However, as the train station for LGW is a South terminal, I can see a move to south terminal working to BA's advantage in terms of justifying a new lounge setup and more convenient train access.

'New' Airbus aircraft. It was either get newer aircraft or lose half of the s/h routes from LGW. Unlikely to see the 777s getting replaced for a fair while though.

BA to move to LGW South Terminal Nov2016

Good news. Hopefully, there will still be an F lounge.

Whatever they put in will be better than they currently have. The lounges at Gatwick are looking very neglected, even if they do have their charm.

I would be surprised if they didn't keep a F lounge of some description.

There will be new lounges. No details as yet. There will be a new check-in area in zone A and C. The move is expected in November 2016, but as with most things in life, there might be a delay as there's lots of work to be done.
