Telescope in hand luggage

I want bring a telescope through with my hand luggage.
It's very light & just shy on 90cms.
I know that's over the permitted lenght but I've often seen people carry extra long objects through such as paintings
Do you think that I will have any problems with security?
I'm travelling longhaul J in a 777 so the overhead bins will take it

They'll just assume you're pleased to see them.

It will count as your second item if it doesn't fit in your bag.

You won't have a problem, in my opinion. It's the sort of thing that gate agents and cabin crew turn a blind eye to.

No, they see all manner of items go through their system every day, so I really struggle to think of what they would object to in a telescope. Binoculars are very popular travel items, for example.

Have just returned from an academic conference with poster tubes much larger than an average scope as hand luggage with no problem.

They may see it as long metal tube = potential to use as a weapon.

I took a 900mm f/11 (Nexstar 80GTL) on a BA flight to Poland a while back, as hand luggage, along with a Celestron goto mount -- it wasn't a problem at all. The cabin crew were interested in it and I spent some time explaining how this was actually a pretty tiny telescope compared to the ones I have at home (8" newtonian for astrophotography and 12" dobsonian for visual) but could still see some pretty amazing things especially in dark skies.
