OT: OneWorld carrier Malev stops operating, flights grounded

Not bankrupt - but it looks like it's going that way:

Hungarian flag-carrier Malev announced on Friday that it had stopped operating because its liquidity situation has become unsustainable and all its flights had been grounded as of 0500 GMT on Friday.

I'm in Hungary now, and it's been known this was coming for a few days. Of course, that prior knowledge caused all Malev's suppliers to ask for advance payment, so bringing the end much more quickly. No-one here really seems to know whether this is going to end in bankruptcy or the Hungarian Government will somehow find a way round the EU subsidy rules.

Thankfully I'm flying home on LH, but BUD airport could be rather interesting when I get there later today ...

We flew them a couple of times last year - shame it is going. Feel sorry for the people working there. And Gatwick loses yet another carrier.

Some more info here as well: Cash-strapped Malev ceases operations

Post HELP- Will BA honor tickets booked through Malev?

Hope a flyertalker may assist- I have flights from ATH to LHR and LHR to JFK on British Airways in Club Europe for late April. They were issued by Malev on Malev ticket stock. E-tickets were emailed to me last week and booking shows confirmed on BA.COM also. Now that Malev has stopped flying- and assuming they fold- is my travel safe with BA or am I stuffed because tickets were bought and issued by Malev??
Information would be greatly appreciated.

So the tickets were issued on 182 ticket numbers and your ath/lhr and lhr/jfk flights are ba operated?

Please IAG pick up some of those routes or buy Malév, this now really puts Star Alliance, read Lufthansa, in dominant position in CEE.

Fly Malév a lot so not happy.

Out of curiosity, why would you issue a solely BA itinerary out of Malev stock?

Incomparable networks in CEE.

Haven't added them up but AB is way behind Austrian/Lufthansa and what Malév offered.
