Where to Hear Choro Music

I've been listening to Choro music recently, and really enjoying it. I may be taking a vacation in Brazil, and would like to hear some Choro live.

Are certain regions/cities well known for Choro? Any particular artists or venues people recommend? I play the mandolin, so would love to hear groups that have a bandolim. Thanks. tls

Regions, no, not really. Certain clubs in certain cities, according to their schedules.

Ok, thanks a bunch. When I start to nail things down, I'll let you know.

I've only been to Brazil once, Salvador and Rio. Would like to see both again, if possible, plus a new city. But nothing is written in stone. tls

Up in Fortaleza, have never seen any reference to a Choro music show, though some visiting artist may have done one. Forro and, secondarily, Sertanejo, dominate the scene here, though there are a few Axé bands, and Samba makes a big splash around Carnaval.

Thanks VidaNaPraia. The link you included in post 5 made me think maybe I should try to attend a Choro festival. Anyone have recommendations in that regard? tls

Choro is better known as Chorinho. It is played all-around Brazil, but specially in and around São Paulo, where you will find it as its strongest, and (secondly) in Rio.

The following link (in Portuguese only) is a Facebook page (with an associated website) dedicated to the Chorinho:

https://www.facebook.com/ChorinhoBrasil

If you contact them, it is very probably that they can direct you to a show near where you will be staying in Brazil.

The Toronto Brazilian Consulate's site currently has a blurb for this book:
"Choro Conversations: Pursuing Life, Love and Brazil's Musical Identity" is a book on Brazilian musical genre "Choro" released in English by the Fulbright Fellow Julie Koidin. Fore more information check http://www.choroconversations.com/

There is choro festival held once a year in a small town named Vitoria, in the state of Espirito Santo.

This year, is scheduled to take place in 23/04/2015, at "morro dos alagoanos" in Vitoria. And the best, it´s free; there is no need to buy tickets or book seats in advance - all you have to do is show up.

Note: Porto Seguro is a small town; Vitoria is a medium sized city.

The festival sounds great!
Thanks for posting.
