Avis Fuel Surcharge rip-off
Rented from Avis SMF yesterday.
Returned the car w/full tank and while I was getting my luggage out of the trunk, the agent handed me a return receipt showing an addition of $15.07 fuel surcharge.
When questioned, the agent mentioned that I did not show her my gas receipt and they automatically post this surcharge even if the gas tank is returned "full" since anyone can go 60 miles on a full tank of gas. She never asked for the gas receipt in the first place.
I shoved my gas receipt in her face and she reprinted a ticket for the 1 day rental with the surcharge removed, then tried to (literally) grab the 1st receipt w/the incorrect charge out of my hand.
I told her I needed it to dispute the charge w/the credit card since she refused to give me a "debit back" receipt. I've rented tons of times from Avis (mainly in Hawaii) and never had this kind of a problem before.
I understand that there is a fuel surcharge for only going a certain number of miles (think its 75 miles), but I've never had anyone arbitrarily add it before.
On signing the contract, I never saw any mention of showing a gas receipt to the agent. In fact, I only had the gas receipt since the Arco I filled up at had a broken cash terminal and I had to go inside for my change.
Is this the norm at Avis locations?
