Expensive RSW Rentals in April 2015
Trying to rent at Fort Myers (RSW), 22 days, April 2015. The majors (including Avis) come in around $1,600-1,800 all in, without CDW/LDW despite entering Wizard, Gold Card numbers, etc. Will I Just have to suck this up, or are there local, reliable suppliers available?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Have you checked Hotwire's opaque prices? Or considered a bid on priceline.com?
If you are a U.S. resident with any U.S.-issued Amex card, you can enroll in Amex's premium car-rental protection program, and your card will be charged just a single fee (either $19.95 or $24.95) that will provide loss/damage coverage for your entire 22-day rental. (Third-party liability is a separate concern.)

You might also price the rental at off-airport locations of Avis, Budget, Hertz, etc., and just take a taxi from the airport to one of those locations, if the savings warrant doing so.

It's nasty. With the majors if you pick up on a Sunday , when town locations are closed, a Corrola costs around $1,800 for 22 days. If you pick up Monday , when town locations are open, airport location will charge around $800 for 21 days. So will taxi and do without car for one day for big savings.
Caveat emptor indeed!

How about doing a one-day rental from Sunday to Monday (perhaps returning to an off-airport location if rate is the same), followed by a three-week rental?

At RSW gas is cheaper to the North, and as much as 40 cents higher to the South, for locals and Snowbirds...
But then someone needs to pay the local taxes.,,

Really? I tried all the Sundays in April with only a Costco code and was showing the Focus for <$50 (except Easter Sunday, which was <$75) including all taxes/fees but no insurance. Are you picking up on Easter? If so, that's a busy travel period since Spring Break happens then for nearly every school in the country, so supply/demand is in effect. And I'm sure if you play around with some of the other AWDs on here, you should find one a bit cheaper than Costco.
