I wonder what training routes the A380 will go on first. I'm assuming NRT-ICN although if they firm up plans I'd like to book a segment on their intra-asia runs.

Most likely the short hauls still use 747, in that case it would be ICN-NRT and ICN-HKG.

Most 380 operators often use HKG for short haul training destination like SQ, TG, MH, KE, CZ.

Is this conversion going to happen? I don't remember hearing that it was even planned, though would be awfully nice

It should....those 777s are only like 3-5 years old. And they have something like 5 subfleets among 12 planes or something. A little more coherence would do them some good for irrops.

A recent article from the Centre for Aviation- http://centreforaviation.com/news/as...-routes-299970

Citing Asiana's Weibo page, the article states that A380 operations will begin May 2014. Given that this info was announced on a microblogging cite used only in China, HK and Taiwan (I believe), perhaps one can infer the first flights will be short-hauls to HK?

This is like triple hearsay but....

Someone on Lucky's blog reported speaking with an OZ flight attendant who reported that an internal memo confirmed A380 service LAX/ICN will commence in August.

oh boy! i'm booked on the 9/1 747 operated ICN-LAX flight.

How many A380s will OZ have by august? one? two? I wonder if the LAX service will be daily right from the start.

I read a while back that the 747s are to be retired as the A380s come online... I'll try to find that memo from OZ on that...

They're not retiring the 747's.
Or if they are, they haven't mentioned anything to the pilots of them.
There is a rumor among the pilots that the 747's may go to Sydney and replace the 777's on that route.......

That would be nice. I'm flying to SYD regularly on business this year. With the extra capacity, would mean easier to get on the flights I want and better chance of empty seats around me.

I'm flying today to LAX on what was supposed to be the 747, but it got swapped down to a 777. Not sure how they're going to fill all the seats on the A380 to LAX being lately it seems they can't even fill the 747. Maybe I'm just flying on off-days though.

I thought the 747 to LAX was taken off the LAX route temporarily just for this holiday rush right now.

It is interesting they will keep the old 747s in service. The 4 747s are between 14-19 years old (2 747-400s and 2 747-combi). I believe one of the reasons they wanted to switch to the A380 was the better fuel economy compared to the 747.

Two A380s with 495 seats would be in service each from Jun 1 for NRT & HKG, from Jun 22 for KIX & BKK. And then from Jul 30 for LAX(daytime) & HKG.

First class 12 seats on lower deck, Biz 66 on upper, Eco 417 about 300 on lower & about 100 on upper.

Large enough lavatories to change clothes for first and biz.

32" screen and 83" pitch for first. 75" for biz & 33" for eco.

Every business seat has aisle.

OZ is considering JFK and FRA with 3rd & 4th A380 in May or Jun next year.

*Four A350s might be in service from 2017.

*Also considering YVR, ATL, IAD, MXP, etc in the long term.

*Handing over PUS-KIX to BX from Feb 21.

So, basically, the same product as the current "77W" (First Suite, Quadra and Y with AVOD).

If that's the case, I'm not sure that I would go out of my way to fly on this one, if I am able to find a seat on a Suite and/or Quadra 777.
