AA Boeing 737-800, type 738D
(configured 16F, 144Y, including 30 MCE - including Exit rows). Current seats seem to be Zodiac 5751 slimline seats.

All aircraft have been converted to the type 738K Oasis/Kodiak configuration

Archived content
Under “Project Oasis” this type will ultimately be refitted to 737 MAX 8 “Project Oasis” standards, with 170 seats: 16 F / J seats with reduced pitch and recline, and 156 ultra-slimline Rockwell Collins (previously B/E Aerospace) Meridian seats with 30” pitch in Main Cabin, 33”pitch in Main Cabin Extra and ultra-slimline lavs, onboard served WiFi IFE (no seatback) IFE, etc.

All 738s delivered prior to 10 Dec 2013 are equipped with center ceiling mounted drop down screens;

738s delivered on or after 10 Dec 2013 currently have seat-back AVOD and 110 VAC plus USB seat power. The IFE will ultimately be replaced by WiFi served IFE.

Link to AA fleet list - 737-800 configuration information by registration ("tail") numbers.

738s (until modified to 7M8 standards) are laid out:

First / Business rows 3-6 (no rows 1 or 2)

Economy from rows 7-30; MCE from rows 7-9, and MCE exit rows 14 and 15. Row 15 has full recline.

15A and 15F are my preferred coach seats on the 737. I try to avoid row 14, as it doesn't recline, and would prefer sitting in the forward MCE section (rows 7-9) over row 14.

Exit row for sure. The fight for overhead bin space on the MCE rows up front is just too much.

So, what happens if you are in row 7 and there is an equipment swap to the 150-seat version, do you automatically have no seat assignment and are more likely to get bumped from the flight, as it now becomes oversold by 10? I will be flying on a flight that will be certainly full, if not oversold, as it is almost full weeks ahead. Is being in row 7 much riskier? Will they bump people by time of check in, right? Regardless of seat assignments?

Unlikely they bump an EXP... this is an example of why they never fully assign all seats until departure. My guess is they'd roll you into some remaining not yet assigned seat (high probability of an aft middle) and bump someone with no status.

There aren't any 150 seat 737s left. So there's no chance of that happening.

I am curious on seating advice. I am on a 737-800 with a current seat map starting in row 7. Since I am booking very late my choices are: 7BE, 8F, 9F, 14E, 15BE. I am normally an aisle person so I am a bit stuck on what is best of these (or if I am better off doing aisle in normally economy)

I would not do row 7. Row 8 and 9 F are good, have good legroom as well. I wouldn't chose row 14 either, on account of the recline issue. Row 15 middle isn't bad, I'd say the best middle seats in the house (and better legroom than regular MCE), but my personal preference would still be the MCE window seats, because I wouldn't want to be sitting between two strangers.

Thanks. That is good to know about row 7, and you sum up the dilemma quite nicely about sitting between strangers vs more legroom.

I was on frame N907NN yesterday that had refurbed-LUS-A319-like new greyish seat covers without AVOD. Only the seat covers were different (or at least in F). Is this an exception?

Row 13 on AA 738

What's up? Are people superstitious about seats in row 13 on a Boing 737-800? On the seat chart of my reservation, people would rather sit well in the back of the plane, both ways.

No recline. It's arguably the worst row on the plane.

737-800 Seat Question

Hello all,
I have a long flight coming up on a 737-800 and am struggling with seats. Right now all that's available are middle seats so I'm wondering if it's worth the extra money to get either a middle exit row, or a middle in the 3rd row of economy. I'm currently in 10E (free) but the rows in front of me are $36. I guess my question is is there any difference between 9E and 10?E I don't mind paying the extra for such a long flight but don't feel the need if it only moves me up one row.
Thanks!

Rows 7-9 on the 738 are Main Cabin Extra, so they will offer a few inches of extra legroom compared to row 10.

Thanks I appreciate it. In your opinion would you choose main cabin extra or an exit row? Thanks again. I just switched from DL and this will be my first time in over 10 years being stuck in a middle seat. I'm dreading it.

Personal preference: I like window seats and will take MCE forward in the cabin over exit row further back... Again, personal preference. The seat itself and service are the same.
