airberlin / AB joins oneworld Mar 20, 2012; AA benefits?

Official annoucement by oneworld

Official annoucement by airberlin

airberlin will become a full member of oneworldŽ with effect from Tuesday 20 March 2012, adding Europe's sixth largest carrier to the premier global airline alliance. Austrian airline NIKI, also a member of the airberlin group, will join oneworld at the same time as an affiliate member.

Next question: AA EQM/EQP/EQS opportunities? Elite bonus miles for AA elites? Availability of AB flights for partner and OW award redemptions?

MODERATOR NOTE

Please do not reply or add to this thread. For further discussion, please go to:

AB / airberlin fully joins oneworld 20 Mar 2012 - 100% EQM on AA-published fares

That thread has the accurate information on EQMs on airberlin and Niki, etc. as of 20 March 2012.

Thank you,

I think some of the AB booking classes would only earn 50% miles though....

If you look at the current earning rates, Air Berlin flights in discount economy accrue 25%. 50% would be an improvement.

AB is already available for award redemption with AA miles (at least for intra-european flights). I booked a weekend round trip KRK-TXL flight 5 days before departure date last November.

Don't they charge for baggage on domestic flights?

I was hoping maybe we'd get waived

No, of course they don't charge for bags.

You'll get standard Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald benefits per oneworld rules. There might be also some extra luggage allowance, but I'm not sure about it.

Does AB even have lounges of their own?

I do know AB contracts with the Skyteam lounge at LAX. I'm sure that'll move to the OW lounge once they join come March 20.

One thing is for certain; there's going to be another way to get between US-Europe when redeeming awards without being penalized with YQ charges that BA loves to impose.

A few, but most are contracted out. DUS, TXL and apparently RSW (where they apparently serve sushi??).

I am curious if they will do anything special for passengers with business class tickets including domestic flights that only have economy. Blocking seats B and E would be nice.

the weight restriction was tough when i flew them domestically. my bag was fine on LH, but AB wanted extra $$$$. still a pretty cute airline.

i am currently booked on an award ticket JFK-LHR (AA) then LHR-TXL (BA) in late April. Hopefully I can switch this to AB nonstop JFK-TXL.
